How far past the E of the fuel guage have you gone? I know the guage isnt perfect but I'm wondering how much time I have when I'm on E. Based on how much gas I can put in, it would seem that the guage can go way past the E before its dry

I usually fill up right when the light comes on, but there is the odd time that for whatever reason ( time, far from "decent" gas stations, etc) where I might try and push it.

i think the rule of thumb is 30 miles, which is a conservative number. i would think most cars can go beyond that. i wouldnt push it though, as ive heard the last bit of feul is not too good for the engine, cuz it's dirty or something.

I ran my car to right at the E, maybe even slightly less. When I filled up I got in 54 litres. AFAIK the tank in the TSK is 65 litres so I had at least 10 liters left in there That would = approx 100 KM (60 miles) more I could have driven; IMO thats a huge reserve.

The most I've ever put in the car was 56L and the gauge was just slightly below empty. If I do my regular city type driving I won't go past 650km without filling up.

I usually fill up before it hits "E" but one time I filled up when the fuel gauge was exactly lined up with "E". On that occasion I figured out that there was a little more than 3 gallons left in the tank. So I figured that I can go another 60 miles past "E" (and maybe 80 if cruising on the highway). I use 50 miles past "E" as a general (safe) guideline.

i always run my meter to E, just a habit because Honda's have so much gas left even when it reads empty. I believe it has 2-2.5 gallons left, since my fillups right after being empty are around 14.5gallons (of 17 gallon tank). I'd have to check the next time I went to be exact though.

So when the light comes on, how much gas is left? I always fill it up at that time, but I keep forgetting to look at the pump to see how much I actually put in. I think last time it read 13 gallons...out of 17, with the light on.

Not only is that gas probalby dirty, but if you are to acutally run out of gas, you could do some serious damage to the catalytic converter. I am not sure of the exact damage that can be caused, but I do know that damage can occur. This of course is not something you want to happen since the catalytic converter is always a rather expesive part on a car.

Needless to say, you do not want to actually find out how far past E you can really go.

I can't really understand that arguement because the fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank. If there was dirt in the gas it would be at the bottom and it wouldn't make any difference if the tank was full or nearly empty.

As far as I know the only reason running on low fuel is bad is because its harder on your fuel pump. This could lead to a fuel pump failure if you do this all the time.

That makes more sense. I couldn't see running out of fuel having anything to do with premature catalytic converter failure.

I've pulled plenty of Krammers before. Once, my car ran out of gas as I coasted into a Gas Station. Cheese.

First of all, RTFM. It warns against running out of gas. Second, the way the gas gets sloshed around in the tank whatever dirt is in the tank is going to get mixed up and suspended in the gas (not to mention the part about the gas being picked up from the bottom anyway) so the myth about the last bit of gas being dirty is just that, a myth. The reason that you don't want to run your tank too low is because the fuel pump (which is in the tank and is *very* expensive to replace) is cooled by being submerged in gasoline. If the gas level gets too low (I've heard less than 1/4 tank) then the fuel pump starts running hot which will shorten its life and eventually cause it to fail.

The idiot light comes on when my fuel tank takes between 12.8 and 13.2 gallons; the capacity is listed for 17.1, which means that one ought to have about 4 gallons of gas for latitude. Given gas mileage ratios, that might buy between 60 and 100 miles of mixed driving before running out. If you fill it up at the point the idiot light comes on, the tank still has about 25% of its capacity (22.97%, but who needs to be exact), which then gives you the magical protection of the fuel pump and other nether parts, presumably.

I generally run it about 40 miles past the idiot light, since I prefer to buy gas in New Jersey, and have to plan my purchases there during business trips.

When it is truly resting - centered - on "E", you've got about a gallon +/- left, based on my experience. I've put in 16+ gallons in, and the needle was square on the "E" (non-navi, obviously). So, I would guess that the difference between the idiot light and the "square on the E" is about three gallons of reserve..................

I gotta admit that I've ran out of gas more than once in my life, and on the TSX, I can tell you, depending on the way you drive... in fact, if you really stretch it out thin, you can drive for around 250km with the gas light on. But please take my word for it, I don't want to be responsible for you running out of gas in the midst of heavy traffic trying to do just that.

i took mine right to the E and when i filled up it took 17.775 gallons. i must have been driving on fumes.
