Hello Everyone. A few question from a noob

Greetings to All.
I just got an '05 TSX with 80K miles and love the car. I have a few questions to you all -
- I have all service receipts and the previous owner serviced the car every 10K miles (as it says in the manual) and that included oil changes. Is not it stretching a little too much for the oil changes?
- I read several threads here that the MID shows oil % life. How do I get to see that (could not find this in the manual)? All I see is trip A and B. Is it somewhere in the Navi screen?

Thanks a lot.

I don't know if this is going to help you at all, but I have an '06, and to see the oil life, you have to cycle through the different views in the MID (between the speedometer and tachometer) using the lower button on the bottom right of the steering wheel.

As far as oil changes go, some would swear that going 10K between oil changes is enough. I would happen to disagree. I always change mine when the MID says so.

Depending on your driving habits, it will vary from about 4000 miles if you drive really hard, and 7000 miles if you are doing almost entirely highway driving. Are you sure he didn't have the oil changed in between these 10K services???

OK, thanks.
I think oil life only shows in '06-up models as they have 2 extra buttons on the steering wheel (on the right side).

As far as oil changes, the previous owner only serviced the car at an Acura dealership and he gave all service receips from day one and all services (including oil changes) have been done between 9 - 10K miles. The owner does not know if the dealer used synthetic oil (most likely not).

Only 06+ has the MID.

10K is too much IMO but its well within Honda spec so I wouldn't be worried. One way to determine if synthetic was used is to simply look at the cost of the oil changes in the records.

My 2006 goes about 5000-6000 miles from 100-0% oil life ... I change it promptly at 0 with synth.

FYI, it's not the MID that shows the oil life ... but the odometer display (on 2006 onward at least). It cycles from Oil life | Trip A + Odometer | Trip A + Outside air temp | Trip B + Outside air temp. Haven't downloaded a 2005 manual (they're online; check the FAQs) though.

I have an 06, and change every 5K regardles of MID. But by that point, I'm usually at 20% or so anyway. I suppose you can go 10K, and some do, but with the mileage you have better to spend an extra $60-90 per year on more oil changes than risk your engine. You may want to use a synthetic if you don't know what the previous owner did - or definitely use synth if you do know. If they used dino, you can go either way.

Thanks for all responses guys!

Just changed oil after 8.5K miles and my tech said it looks as if it has less than 2K. I peplaced it with dino because I called the dealership that serviced the car and they said that "if the customer did not request synthetic, then we use regular". I figured it makes no sense to switch to synthetic at 80+K when I do oil changes every 2.5-3K miles anyway.

Thanks a again.

If you're doing oil changes every 2500-3000 miles you're pouring money away. Most cars (exceptions: working vehicles, race cars, etc.) just don't need the oil changed out that much. Take a look at cartalk.com or consumerreports.org for more info.

Just my .

You are probably correct, I'm just anal when it come to maintenance...

I have another question about AC - I have a Navi and I shut off AC by clicking AC and then "off" on the screen. It looks like AC stops working but I still feel the fan working and can even hear it (very silently) blowing air. Also, the temperature is still displayed on top, by the clock. Is it suppose be that way? I've had many cars with climate control and I never felt fan blowing so hard after AC is off.

Maybe I just not shutting off AC correctly?

^^i'm pretty sure what you are experiencing is just air blowing out of the vents while you are driving. if you don't want that, just close the vents.

Typically all I do is press the "off" button on the unit itself. It's the third button to the left of the Nav screen.

Or press the "recirculate" button when the system is off. This'll prevent outside air from entering the vehicle. I love that feature.

I knew that the fan is suppose to blow some air when the AC is shut off, but not to the point that you can actually hear it blowing...

When you shut the AC off, are your tempertature settings (left and right sides) still displayed up next to the clock?

thanks

^^no they shouldn't be if the system is off. it sounds like you are only turning off the A/C rather than turning off the entire system.

like thunder04 said, just push the off button to the left of the nav. I only use the auto and adjust the temperatures accordingly. i find that it is enough for me.

In nicer weather (with the non-NAVI climate control), I turn the system OFF, then hit MODE 2x to set the vents to "feet/dash," and let normal flow-through ventilate the car. Helps mileage a bit, also let me have all the engine for an uphill "take-off climb-out" onto the freeway onramp. Yeeeeee-ha.... Then I re-enable AUTO climate control once I'm up to speed.
