I used to teach chemistry. I'm a physical chemist by training.

"Xenon" by itself is used to refer to the element. The periodic table mentioned earlier in this thread is also known as the "periodic table of elements."

When you talk about the atom you say "xenon atom."

[My goodness, I had no idea there were chemistry and astronomy discussions going on in this thread.]

Anyways I don't think you have to replace teh assembly which is waht is so much. If it blow replace the bulb which is probably around $65 if I were to guess. Expensive, but much more reasonable. They should last a SUPER long time though. If u r talking about replaceing an assembly cause it cracked, then learn how to drive j/k

ok, A plane originates out of Canada and is on its way to the US. It is filled w/ 50% Canadians and 50% Americans. Its engines go out and it crashes on the border w/ half the plane in the US and half in Canada. Search and rescue vehicles rush to teh scene from both countries. After the fires are out and everything calms down, the Canadians and Americans begin talking. Where would they bury the survivors?

Yeah, actually -1.4 (looked it up, of course).

Looks like Sirius really is first. Arcturus is #3. I really would have guessed Sirius, but I sort of looked it up, and I thought it said Arcturus!

Check this out:

"Sirius and Arcturus have the same luminosity (M=0). Arcturus is about 21 times the Sun’s radius and Sirius is about 3 times the Sun’s radius. Which is hotter?"
"Sirius is the hotter star. This is the 'flip-side' of problem 1. The two stars produce the same total energy but Arcturus has more area to emit energy from. To create the same total energy, Arcturus must therefore produce less energy per area, and so it is cooler then Sirius."

I have no idea what any of this means.

If they have the same 'luminosity,' then I guess Sirius is closer to Earth for it to have an apparently greater magnitude??

Where is Larchmont, NY anyway?? I'm sure you can see many more stars in your sky than we can here, 10 miles from Philly light pollution.

Back to TSXs... I saw my 3rd one (other than mine) today at an auto glass shop in Maple Shade... anyone, anyone? CG - sharp color. I think it was there to have the glass tinted.

(former amateur astronomer nerd speaking here... now a nerd for purely other reasons)

Welcome, JCG! It's in Westchester, about 10 miles north of Manhattan, kind of between Scarsdale, New Rochelle, and Mamaroneck. Neat little town. (Don't spread the word; we want to keep it little.) Pretty nice sky for only 10 miles from the city. And pretty nice driving.

I guess this stuff about "we're really on-topic because brightness is all about headlights" is working!

thanks for the welcome. Ever take your TSX to the Poconos or Catskills? I have only had mine 2 weeks but have had the pleasure of Pennsylvania 2-laners for a weekend. I found the HID headlights to be comforting for deer-spotting on the side of the road (lame attempt to approach topic). Bright stars that-away too.

Not yet -- but other deer-rich roads (e.g. Taconic Pkwy) -- and for me, the TSX's lights (low beam) don't stretch far enough to give me as much warning as I'd like. Then again, if you happen to be one of those who holds to the theory that the best thing is to drive right into them, it doesn't matter.

TSX headlights

Something to note... My right front headlight went out. $195 for the bulb,
$495 for the add'l "system", plus labor, plus a week plus before I can
get in to an Acura service shop to fix. Deal breaker for buying another
Acura. Love the car, but it's a bit crazy for a headlight.

According to your other post, your car is barely out the warranty period. Have you taken your car to other dealers? Certain dealers might be willing to replace the unit for you free of charge. Additionally, have you contacted Acura Customer Relations regarding the problem? They might be able to make things right.

One service issue = deal breaker? No one can guarantee other makes/models will provide free service when it's out of warranty...

What is that $495? Ballast? If the bulb is burnt, you should only have to change the bulb... take it to another dealership and see what they say, and if they can cover it under warranty.

I'm with JTso on this. Deal breaker on one issue? and, let's face it: HIDs are expensive. whether a BMW, Lexus or Merc, I'm sure prices are comparable. Unless you want to buy a car without HIDs, which I will never do since I've driven my TSX with HIDs.

headlights

I was told $195 for the bulb, $495 for the assembly system. I'm looking
into this with another dealer.

The "deal breaker" is actually the service. I've been to 4 different Acura
service dealers in the Bay Area. Three Acura-proper and one Acura mechanic.
One said they had the part but could not do the work for a week, another
could do the work but did not have the part, etc. When I went to purchase
the part, I was told they had to have the full assembly before digging into
the problem. Still running around trying to get this figured out... Any pointers
would be appreciated. It's just a headlight after all! Price is one thing, but
the simple fact that I can't get it fixed is another. Again, love the car!

We have many members changing out their OEM headlights to JDM lights. I would think you can pick up a set for much less money. Then find a member in your area to install it for you. It would take less time and much cheaper if you don't mind a used headlight. Btw, a new headlight is about $325 and the bulb is $149 online.

This is very helpful, thanks. I am shopping around dealers now. there are two dealers here (Bay Area, CA), that I'm "working". Thanks very much for the advice. Shopping around is good...

There is a lot of confusion about Xenon or HID lights.
HID headlights are essentially a "metal halide" light. Xenon gas is used in the initial start up phase of the light, however, it is not Xenon gas that creates the light (as would be the case with a florescent light).

Metal halide lighting is also very popular with the Horticultularists.

Speaking of headlights, since getting my new 06 PWP Auto not more than a month ago, I got flashed by oncoming traffic twice in a row in one stretch of road. I guess my low beams were too bright for them

Yah, they're very bright. But since my car is dropped I sort of need them to see all the bumps on the road, but it must be a pain for the cars in front of me and oncoming traffic .

My friend mentioned getting the lights "smoked", only I don't really know what that is.

Mine were actually a bit high when I got the car. I was constantly blinding oncoming traffic. I adjusted them down a bit to rectify the situation. I had e-code headlamps on my previous car, so I am used to having a sharp horizontal cutoff... the trick is to adjust them just so, otherwise you'll blind oncoming traffic or you won't be able to see more than a few feet in front of the car.
