Going into 1st gear while moving.

i know on some cars you can easily go into 1st while moving slowly, but how is it for the tsx? i heard you are not supposed to go into 1st unless moving b/c its bad for the synchros, is this true?
do you guys just start from 2nd even while its moving reallly slow like 2mph, or just go into 1st?

I go into 1st while moving slowly without much trouble. I double-clutch the maneuver to make it smoother, however. 2mph and I'm in 1st for sure.

You can usually feel when the tranny wants you to do it and when it doesn't. If you are at a boderline speed, try pushing the stick into first, if it resists pop it down into 2nd, if it goes into gear let the clutch up slowly.

The TSX goes into 1st more smoothly while rolling than many other cars I've driven (especially my last car -- you pretty much had to be stopped). It pops in smoothly with just gentle pressure on the shifter.

Unless you're just barely rolling, though, 2nd is a better choice.

Unless I'm completely stopped, I rarely put it in 1st.

It'll save wear/tear on your gearbox if you aren't shifting into first while moving, if thats the question.

I've noticed the tranny will fight you a little bit unless you are stopped or BARELY moving, otherwise just use 2nd.

I agree. It would resist shifting into 1st if it doesn't want you to so drop it down to 2nd. save you headaches in the future.

I feel resistance when going into 1st while moving very very slowly but if I pop it into second, the engine lugs a little too. So it's a loss-loss situation.

The shifter seems to have resistance above a speed it likes to take first, plus it can be a bit jerky b/c of the Drive by Wire. I have learned to ride out second even at slow speeds. Feel the car out and it shall treat you well.

Sometimes when rolling to a stop an the light turns green, I'll go into 1st at around 4 or 5 mph...I double clutch it, and I bring it to a high rev (maybe 4k). It lets me go into 1st with ease, although my rpm's end up being high (around 3k).

I usually go with a gut instinct on deciding between 1st and 2nd gear. I use 2nd gear more often, but then I can't accelerate quickly when I floor it. If I want to take off quickly, I'll choose the 1st gear.

I kept a close eye on my guages while driving this morning. While decelerating, if you blip the gas pedal, you can push the shifter into 1st with the car going as fast as 35 mph. (Of course, do not release the clutch at this speed!)

When braking into a sharp turn (such as turning onto a side street), I've found that I heel/toe blip the throttle, shift into first, blip again if needed while releasing the clutch and GO. If, for example, your going into 1st gear at 20mph, the engine spins up to 4k rpm.

My girlfriend was able to shift to first gear while we were cruising at 35mph while trying to downshift to 3rd gear. She swore she didn't feel any resistance...

and she did release the clutch, oh my dear car.

You can go into first when moving, you just need to clip the throttle, press the clutch in and then shift into first (in that order). This way, the synchros won't be abused. If you force it into first without blipping the throttle, you'll hear a loud thud, which is the sound of the synchros speeding up the input shaft (and also causes accelerated wear on the synchros).

I think this would take the car over the redline if you released the clutch all the way at 35 mph in 1st, but maybe not enough to do any damage.

By the way, I made a mistake in my earlier post...I go into 1st gear at around 10 or 11 mph (I thought the first numbered tick was 10, but it's actually 20)
