Congrats on your purchase!

Check out this thread from a couple months ago on how to drive manual transmission:
http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8962

There's a really great school called Shifters that teaches drivers how to drive stick and you don't have to worry about messing up your car. Here's their website: http://www.shifters.ca/about.asp
I think they are only in Toronto but there must be similar schools elsewhere...

Some of us had to learn in the ancient POS vehicle that we had to earn money for by mowing lawns and working odd jobs and stuff... Since you've been lucky enough to be handed a car that you really can't afford, make sure to learn in some other car - NOT the TSX. Try a '69 Datsun 510, or a '49 International Harvester dump truck, or a '51 Willys stepside pickup, or anything.

Seriously, you will not appreciate the TSX 6-speed if it's your introduction to shifting.

Good luck working on learning the 6MT on the TSX ... Honda will make it easy for you. Be sure to ask for help from a friend or relative and take it easy. You will get used to it, but the first few times starting off in 1st while on a hill can be tough so practice, practice, practive

P.S. Let's do let this thread go down the "you will never appreciate your TSX" route guys ... please. For all we know he paid for part of it or he deserves it. In either case .... be nice. Just trying to be a bit proactive

Agreed with you elduderino... Should have attended driving lessons, or at least have a little experience by driving an old car, before actually trying on the lovely TSX... my heart be hurt when you do damage on it.......

Nah, so long as you're careful you won't have any trouble. The TSX has a fair amount of torque (well at least compared to the car I learned to drive stick on) so stalling it is tough. I do recommend that you take a short 2 to 3 hour course before you drive but after a week or so of practice you'll be a pro.

Congrats! And remember - when you know how to drive stick, you're just better than everyone else

Back in my day, we had to drive barefoot in the snow! With nails in the pedals! But I'm not bitter...

Seriously, if you are worried both about the car and about learning, you will make more mistakes than if you are just focused on the driving. And it will make the first time you drive the TSX much more like good sex, instead of like first-time sex. ; )

Congrats on your new ride.

This isn't driving instruction, but details on what is happening under the covers that you may or may not find helpful or interesting:

Dear Tom and Ray:

Hi, guys. I just bought a cool new 2004 five-speed turbo VW Bug convertible. I bought it last Wednesday. Happy birthday to me. Saturday, I took my daughter out to teach her how to drive a stick. After 45 minutes of driving around a parking lot, she seemed to have the hang of it. We started out of the parking lot, and smoke started pouring out, along with a terrible smell. Yes, the clutch was gone. Monday morning, it went back to the dealer on a flatbed truck. It had 68 miles on it. Is it likely that there was an existing problem, or could this have burned the clutch out? I learned to drive stick on a Bug 35 years ago. It took me hours to learn how to shift. I can't believe this would be so touchy. What do you think? -- Marj
