Gas Mileage - 21.5 city - is that it?

I bought a 2004 TSX 5AT about 2.5 weeks ago. Well, 3 tanks of gas later and I'm getting 21.5 mpg in city and freeway (traffic) driving. That doesn't seem very good when I have read some of you guys and gals getting 27-30.

Is this a normal city range for all practical purposes or should I expect better?

Sorry if this is a repeat post but I did a search and nothing specific came up on this topic.

I'm getting pretty crappy gas mileage also. My MID only gives me about 22-23 mpg average... if I'm lucky. The first couple months I had the car, I was averaging around 25-26 (mix highway/city driving). I'm nowhere near that now. Part of it probably has to do with the winter fuel blend. In addition, I do a lot less highway driving now that I don't have to travel as much for my job.

I thought there might be something wrong with my car, but then I took one extended highway trip and average over 30mpg. Therefore, I'm going to blame the poor gas mileage on my driving habits.

I get the same mileage as you. But I have a reason - most of my trips around the city are rather short (2-5 miles several times a days)

yep. it's not great mileage. same here:

I am getting around 17-19mpg these days - 70% city driving now. I notice the difference a lot since I moved and previously had a 32 miles each way commute (when I was getting around 26mpg on average). now my commute is 7 miles each way. When I head out for a 50+ miles trip I get around 28mph highway.

and having a manual doesn't help either.....I tend to rev the engine when stopped at long lights to go along with the VROOOMM VROOOM! sounds I am making.

MY gas mileage has dropped as well. I blame Winter gas, needing to allow some time to warm up the engine, the fact that the engine is not as efficient while cold, my short trips, and my insane driving habits...

Waiting for the summer and longer trips to see it get better!

My mileage has also fallen quite a bit since when I first got the car. I used to get almost 400 miles from a tank, now I'm down around 350. I think is partly due to increased city driving, perhaps slightly more gas-greedy driving habits, and my replacement tires, which I think are heavier than the OEMs.

in addition the tsx has a rather small tank too. so if i drive a lot of city streets i find myself having to fill up at around 260-280 miles

My mileage also improved somewhat as I finished engine break in and through my first 10k miles on the engine. With my mods, a heavy foot, and a stop-n-go, full traffic, short trip commute, I make around 21-22 and consider it acceptable.

As soon as I'm cruising on the freeway (roadtrips) I'm back up above 30mpg, which always feels nice.

I consistently get 28-29mpg combined highway/city driving. Even times when I'm driving hard I'm pretty pressed to get it below 25mpg.

Thanks for the cold weather and long warm up start, I'm getting 22~24mpg. Thats down from 29mpg during the summer. And distance drop from 350~375 to 290~301 too. Bottom line...winter cold and city driving sucks!

I'm getting 21.6 mpg on my car based on what it says on the navi trip computer. I used to get anywhere from 23.5-24.6 mpg during the fall. Has got to do with the cold temps.

you cannot ALWAYS trust your mpg meter.
it varies, depends on the condition and how you drive.

i also am everywhere runnning mpg.
i get around 19 to 21 in city driving
and my long highway drive (once every 4 months, college break) from Michigan to NY, i get 30 to 34

I got 26.5 on my last fill-up, and that was mixed driving, although most of my commute is highway-in-the-city. The lowest I've gotten is probably 24. Going from 19 to 34 is kind of a big range! I seem to have trouble getting out of the 24 to 28 range.

21 or less seems kind of low. Try not getting into the high revs, not going full throttle, ease up when approaching lights rather than going fast only to have to completely stop then re-start... Don't go faster slower faster slower... try to be steady and consistent. Then see if that improves things.

I'm still getting 15-16 mpg on local and highway mixed and I am at 11,000 miles. Congrats to me...yeah right! I still don't know what the heck the problem is.

Same here. I even added a little bit of air in my tires, but it did not help.

I average 28-29 in town just driving normally. If I push a lot I've dropped down to 24-25. Around 35 highway. My theory on the gas milage is altitude (Rather than it being me just driving like a total wuss.). I live around 6500 feet. The air is thinner, so the ECU allows less gas in to compensate for the lack of O. Of course we also lose around 25% of our HP up here too...

Same here. I drive about 95% city. But when I travel for work, over a couple of days I get about 28-30mpg...

Check your tire pressure it could also have an effect on getting lower mpg than expected.

^^^

I run my (shitty) stock tires @ 36F/34R, and I notice I do better by ~1-2mpg.

However, even with this improvement, I still get around 19-20mpg in 95% city/backroad driving (damn you VTEC!!!)

95% city driving and 21 mpg average ('04 5AT). But... nobody beats me off the stoplight and I only get passed when I let someone pass me. If I take it easy I'll get 2-3 mpg more. To hell with taking it easy and get out of my way! No complaints here. BTW - On the freeway I'll get 29+ mpg.

Many places change formulations in the winter for emissions/pollution reasons. These changes typically mean worse gas mileage.

It really depends on the traffic of your commute. I recently switched to a different job. The distances from my house are exactly the same between my old job and the new one. Both are 21 miles, but the old one had traffic all the time, and the new job has very very light traffic. I averaged 21-22 mpg with the old job. I'm now averaging 25-27 mpg with the new job. When my wife drives it to work, her average is even worse. She averages 19-20 mpg with 4 miles of stop-n-go commute.
