Fuel Gauge Question
I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my fuel gauge.
Let me first say that I don't ever let the tank get this low, I know it's bad.....blah, blah, blah....but this was a special situation.
Anyway, the low fuel light came on, and I still had to drive for awhile before I could get gas. Between the time the light came on and I finally refueled, I probably drove 50 miles, and it was not highway driving....many stop and starts.
When I finally got the the gas station, I'm thinking I'm about to run out of gas and that I'm lucky I made it, but when I fill up it only takes 13.9 gallons???? What the heck?
So, if we have a 17.1 gallon tank, and I used say 2 gallons after the low fuel light came on, and the car only took 13.9, that means that the light came on when I still had 5 gallons in the tank??!! Is this right?
I looked in the manual to see if I could find anything saying how much gas is left in reserve when the low fuel indicator comes on, but found nothing.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks-JS

This has been discussed. Have you tried searching?

And yes, the gauge is no where near accurate. There is typcially somewhere between 3-4 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on. The reason for this is so that Joe Idiot doesn't get himself stranded in the middle of nowhere with no gas.
