to answer your question completely, yes she can run 87 octane. HOWEVER, she will notice less performance (which she prolly doesnt care about) and perhaps more importantly worse gas milage. the engine in her tsx is not a regular 4 cylinder engine. it is a specially constructed 200 hp 4 cylinder. that is the reason right there why Honda specifically recommends 91 octane. it is a specially engineered engine. if she is too cheap to spend approximately $3 more on a 15 gallon fill up once a week (premium is usually .20 cents higher than regular so .20 x 15 gallons = $3, approximately the cost of a fancy Starbucks coffee once a week) then I think she is driving the wrong car and you should have looked into purchasing a toyota camry or something where regular gas is commended. plus, youre gonna open yourself into possibly voiding warranty issues with the dealership if they find out you use regular gas (not saying they would be right to do that but it wouldnt shock me if it happened). they will be very technical and say the manual specially says this and then youre gonna have to argue with them. plus, if your woman does end up having worse gas milage using 87 octane, it will prolly cost her more than the $3 it would take to use premium.

I use regular gas with my 06 tsx and do mostly highway driving. I just drove from NC to NJ today and averaged 34.2 MPG (old fashion calculating) My car now has almost 109K problem free miles. I have all the service done by acura/honda dealers and never has any problems with getting any warranty work done. The dealership knows I use regular gas. (I told them)

The higher the compression, the higher octane needed. The TSX has a high-compression motor, that's why Honda recommends 91. You can put 87, but your motor won't be very happy, and don't expect it to last very long. You'll also notice reduced performance and fuel economy, which probably negates the extra cost of 91 to less than a dollar per fill-up. I'd gladly pay that extra dollar for peace of mind.

It's like inviting the Queen over to your place, and serving her plain toast and tap water. Sure you can do it, but it's just stupid.
