Frustration!

Its summer time, friends, and i dont have a job. So this means i cut down on the A/C usage and use the fans more often. This presents a problem as i have a nav and you have to goto the climate window and hit the a/c off button, then the fan speed i want, and then the fresh air button EVERY TIME! is there a way that i can just turn on the fan and not the A/C (and i dont want any commetns of just rolling the window down...). Thanks. I am very frustrated.

Oh crap, you're only 16... That may be a reason

Try banks. You'd think 16 year olds would be a liability, but you'll take less money and don't mind working odd hours... Plus, you're easier to train. I worked at a bank from 16-20 and it looks really good on a CV/Resume. Plus, you don't feel like an idiot working there as you have several thousand dollars at an arms length at all time -- which can be a tad empowering.

Good luck...

i applied for a job at local bank as a teller (i got a call back and interview)... and my friend (who also works at a bank) told me her friend got robbed while working recently.. then i reconsidered. lol

I had larceny committed against me. It doesn't come out of your paycheck, and its a risk you take working at a bank, sure -- but I think it's a decent gig. Bank robbers are idiots and always get caught, and your friend is still alive right?

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? :-)

Everyone has a friend of a friend that worked at a bank that got robbed. As long as your friends dont have that many friends, i'm thinking you're ok...

Now that we're totally off topic -- I didn't get the nav exactly for reasons like this one. Oh and, you can't take it with you.

Turning off the AC isnt going to save you any gas (google Mythbusters and you'll find the episode). Just go easy on the throttle, thats all...

woah, is that really true? a/c doesnt burn gas? i read that it doesnt because compressor belt is always running but someone started talking about the compressor clutch kicking in when a/c is on causing friction and more gas used?

Driving the same way I always do, I dont notice a difference with AC on or off. I do however notice a difference in power. So, two different things...

The experiment was flawed at the base of things. They did it with Ford Explorers. They'll guzzle the most gas no matter what.

If you need cooling, AC is the way to go on the highway, and windows down driving around town.

Besides, I ran with the A/C on and a ton of traffic this past week. Since I track my mileage very closely, I found a 2 mpg difference with the A/C on verses normal driving.

That difference, is that better or worse mileage?? I'm assuming 2 mpg worse.

Unfortunately I can't find a reliable estimate of how much power our A/C compressor draws, but it appears that the average for cars is in the neighborhood of 5hp. Cruising on the highway uses on the order of 25hp so I would expect that, at worst, we'd take a fuel economy hit of 3-5mpg. Of course this assumes the air conditioner is running at full blast all the time, which is unlikely on a trip of any significant length (in time, not distance).

Doesn't windows down use more gas too due to drag resistance?

Yes. The magnitude of this is much more difficult to estimate but it is generally accepted that at highway speeds it is far more efficient to use the air conditioner and close the windows. What OP was asking about -- keeping the windows closed and AC off and turning just the fan on -- is the most energy-efficient, but presents the risk of heatstroke at least where I live, so don't do that unless you're 16 and have no job

My experience --> A/C on and driving the same way as I drive with A/C off = About 2 mpg less. And yes I can feel the difference in power loss with it on. As for the hit in the wallet, I'd rather not sweat about it too much. But then again I have a job.

Not to put too fine a point on this "problem" for our 16 year old TSX owner, but given current events and an eye on the future if I were he I'd be more worried about being drafted and ending up driving a Humvee with no A/C and really shitty gas mileage. To paraphrase the bear, "Sometimes you get the future and sometimes the future gets you."

Actually, the that Mythbusters episode was flawed and they revisited it again in another episode with several tests that showed conclusively that airconditioning compressors use more fuel than keeping the windows open.

no, seriously if the kid is given a tsx at age 16 and his parents arent smart enough to make him get a job or give him more money for gas this thread needs to be locked.

The kid asked a question and to be honest, it was a better question than half of the other crapped asked by most members. His age and financial responsibilites are not cause to lock a thread.

There were several Muslims (two pakistanis and a kuwaiti) in my division in recruit training. If you are a legal permanent resident of the US aged 18-26 you can theoretically get drafted. The more relevant factor by far is that there won't ever be a draft.
