Are fogs really needed?

Hey all, I am going to buy a TSX in a couple of weeks, and I would like to know your opinion of the foglights...my MDX has fogs, which seem to help a lot...but it does not have xenon lights...so I am curious how the fog performance on the TSX is! Thanks!

The fog lights don't add an appreciable amount of light to the standard HID low beams, although the ground immediately in front of the car (<5 feet) is more well-lit. In my opinion, the fogs are more cosmetic than practical.

We've had a lot of fog here lately, and I've found the fog lights to be reasonably useful. But, in general, I agree with XplorX4. More cosmetic than practical.

works in both ways for me. I like how they look and the area I live in gets a lot of fog so they come in useful for that.

two things that should matter to you.
1. do you like how they look?
2. do you get fog in your area?

Q. Are fogs really needed?

A. Do you get a lot of fog?

We get a lot of rolling fog in my area, with an ocean and inlets and bays, so yes, I think they're important - to me!

Besides the cost and time to install, the downside is that since they're mounted low they're even more vulnerable to damage from stones than headlights.

My Volvo has both front fog lights (optional) and a rear (standard) fog light. (MB, Audi and Jaguar also provide rear fog lights in the US. BMW leaves the rear fog light socket and removes the bulb and switch in the US! They probably think we don't know how to use the lights in the US. They're probably right.)

Front fog lights are designed to throw light down below the fog and to the sides. The rear fog light is a single high mounted bright light.

In spite of what you see many drivers doing (read "BMW drivers"), fog lights are designed to be used in FOG!!!! The idea is to see in the fog (and be seen from behind with the rear fog light), not to blind the driver coming from the opposite direction.

nah. My Volvo has a rear foglight, and I only use that when it's needed. As for the front foglights (my tsx/suv) I always use them.

I would like to add the rear foglight to the tsx. I wonder how hard it would be to get all of the parts from the Euro Accord?

If you wanted to add rear fogs I'd just wire some lights behind the back reflectors. It'll a lot cleaner without a light cut inot the bumper.

My TSX's low beams are aligned so perfectly--not too high--that I get excellent coverage close to the asphalt.

I like fog lights, but I don't need them. They look kind of cool on the TSX, but I decided could have other fun with the $600 or so it would have costed me to buy them and have them installed. (As I get older, I get more practical.)

On the other hand, if you include the fogs in the deal, you can usually get it done for a lot less than that. I gave the dealer a little less than $500 for the fogs and luggage net, and wheel locks, all installed.

I got the fogs b/c I like how they add light coverage in other cars, only to find that they really aren't needed in the TSX due to excellent HID coverage (except in true foggy situations, which I've yet to encounter). I like the way they look, BUT I have already had the cover for the right one broken by a rock. The light itself still works, but the cover is shattered. I pulled the rock out of it and it was only about 3cm x2cm x2cm or so. The car just passed 5000 miles today so I'm going to see if the dealer will just replace it at the upcoming service stop (not holding my breath though).

The fogs were about $450 for me.

I have the fogs, installed them myself as well as had the foglight plates painted to match the car (that is more of value that the fogs themself). IMO, the fogs are purely cosmetic aside from some additional coverage to the corners of the road. If you do get them, go the extra mile and get the plates painted. On my CG, it isn't extremely noticeable, but on other cars, it would look so sweet to have them painted.

Also, if you are inclined to install yourself, I and others have spent a great deal of time discussing it, so do a search.

MB, Audi, and Jaguar has the rear foglights because they are mandatory in europe. That's all... i guess they just decided to put them in most if not all their models to make things easier.

Cosmetic.

The HIDs provide such great coverage, if you still need fogs, maybe you shouldn't be driving in that bad of weather.

Having lived next to the coast, I've occasionally seen pea soup like fog where you literally could not see 5-10 feet in front of your car, and fogs lights on my old Honda did nothing to help except to light up more white fog. Also, with the factory fogs, you have to have the regular headlights on and that almost defeats the purpose of using foglights to cut underneath the fog because the regular headlights will light up the blinding fog.

Plus, someone here mentioned they didn't like the color of the light coming from the foglights. We have nice expensive HIDs that emit the slightly blue - bright white light but the foglights are halogen and emit the old school yellowish light. So the person went out and bought the fake HID Xenon gas lightbulbs so they would match closer with the the real HID headlights, which could cost you another $40-60 bucks.

The foglights without a doubt look better than cheap ass plastic covers, but IMO didn't think it compensated for the $500 bucks installed (or the $280 for the lights and a whole day of elbow grease work that includes taking off your whole front bumper, etc.) .

I think it's pretty cheap of Acura to NOT make them standard. What do they think, people will upgrade to a TL because they have them standard.

when i lived in europe (germany) the rear fog light was called a parking light... which was switchable depending on which side of the road you parked on. it was used because the streets were very narrow and on a foggy night it is hard to see a parked car... hence the light. It looks like a brake light is on... only one side is lite. The side closest to the road.
