Final Debate & Poll 6MT versus 5AT

Both have their benefits, however it sure seems that the 6MT owners are very pleased with the power and have THE transmission of choice to compliment the I4. I have seen a few people from this board who are 5AT owners say they "wished" they would have got the 6MT. I have not heard of any 6MT "wishing" they would have got the 5AT.

Comments please as I will have to make this decision soon. I have test drove both and am leaning 6MT. I just don't want to regret my decision a few years down the road......I'm not a 20something, I'm a 40something and enjoy the sportiness of the 6MT, but wonder if I will get tired of it in a few years?

I also want to add, that my wife will drive it back and forth to work, about 2 miles each way, and around town running her errands, very little freeway. On the weekends and vacations it becomes my car (I have a company car) and there will be road trips - flat and mountainous. My wife can drive a manual very well (we used to own a '99 Civic Si). She originally "thought" being a Luxery car, we "should" get the 5AT, but after reading the RAVE reviews from those who have the 6MT or the professional reviews where the 6MT was driven and gets a big thumbs up it has really changed our thinking.

My big hang-up is whether we will grow tired of rowing through the gears and wished we would have gotten the 5AT a few years down the road?

Finally - Also wanted to say my company car, a 2006 ford escape has an automatic, which we both can drive for personal use, so if we know it is stop-n-go traffic, or whatever we can take the ford.....but that is not much fun.

IMHO, it comes down to this.... when you are in your car.... are you a driver (6MT) or a passenger (5AT) ?

This title is completely misleading.... we all know this isn't the final debate.

BTW, glad to have the 6MT

As I’ve said in a couple of other posts, the TSX is the best-shifting car I’ve had in 30 years of MT car ownership. I’ve owned my ’04 for 29 months and driven it 32,000 miles, so the novelty of it is long gone, but almost every time I drive it I find myself marveling at the shifter and clutch. They're THAT good. The shifter has a wonderfully solid and precise feel, and the clutch-pedal effort and travel, and the clutch engagement point seem just right to me.
Unless a prospective TSX buyer is incurably MT-phobic or has a nightmare of a daily commute – many, many miles of stop-and-go traffic – I strongly urge him or her to choose MT. As far as I’m concerned, those who don’t are missing out on one of the major things that make the TSX such a pleasing car to drive.
(Having said that the novelty of the TSX is long gone, I need to add that I still look forward to driving the car, even if I’m just going to be going a few miles to do an errand. Also, I’d choose MT no matter how bad my commute was.)

6MT, if your driving for the fun.........5AT is great for commuting, city driving. Like you said.......pros and cons for each. I picked the 5AT because it's my daily driver (commuting to work), etc. Sometimes I'll slip it into the manual mode for a different driving experience. You can't slip it into automatic with the 6MT. If you're wife can drive stick and you don't have to deal with traffic, there's absolutely no reason not to get the 6MT.

Hey Gibson, I sure did. Isn't it great to have a forum like this where you can get real opinions from those who own and drive the exact car you are going to purchase. As indicated, this will be the final post from me on this subject as I will be making the decision shortly. My intent on this poll, was to actually see WHO regretted buying a 5AT and wish they would of went 6MT. I just don't want to make a 30K mistake. You act as if this annoys you? If it does, no need to read or contribute to this post.

Thanks to all those who have replied, some excellent reasons to go 6MT.

Ah, maybe I should start reading posts.

If your wife CAN drive a stick then the answer is easy. Get the MT.

BUT, having owned both I can tell you the 5AT isn't as bad as most of these MT snobs make it out to be. I really think the AT suits the TSX's personality better. It is afterall somewhat of a luxury car, and the butter smooth AT works great. You can't go wrong either way.

You miss the point, why do you re-create threads you have already started, twice? Just bump the old ones. There is nothing posted in this thread that isn't posted a thousand times in all of those other threads. It does annoy me. Re-creating threads over and over doesn't make you a forum contributer, it makes you an attention whore. Your whole point of "who regretted buying the AT" has been covered before too. Don't give me this beautiful forum BS, you didn't want to search and you wanted the attention of a new thread.

If you're not dealing with bumper to bumper traffic, 6MT is the way to go!

Hey man, eighth time's the charm. Surely there will be critical new information revealed in this thread that couldn't be found in any other discussion about an identical topic.

Or maybe he's just trying to PW and this is the only way he can think of.

This is SO situation dependent....I LOVE the 6MT, drove manual in my previous cars, but not for one day do I regret getting the 5AT. Make the choice according to your needs.

We don't need multiple threads with the same poll. This poll will also NOT tell you WHO regretted buying which tranny, only how many. Lets stick to the one poll that already exists for this purpose.
