GENERAL FAQS

What is the break-in period of my Acura?
Help assure your vehicle's future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you drive during the first 600 miles (1,000 kilometers). During this period:

Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration.
Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken in by moderate use for the first 200 miles (300 km).

Can I have my maintenance services performed by anyone I choose?
Maintenance services and repairs may be performed by any qualified technicians.

Therein lies the rub: who is qualified? Acura dealers know your Acura best; they're the best choice for all your vehicle's needs.

Many after-market repair services, such as the mass-marketers (chain stores), hire non-Acura-trained people to work on your high-technology vehicle. Generally speaking, their Acura product knowledge is minimal.

Some ex-dealership technicians open their own independent shops and specialize in that brand of vehicle. However, their "factory" training is usually several years old, so their technical knowledge of current model vehicles will not be as good as the local dealer's technicians, who routinely receive new model training from American Honda.

My "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" stays on while I'm driving. What should I do?
This indicator comes on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch ON.

If you have recently refueled your Acura, the cause of this indicator coming on could be a loose or missing fuel filler cap. Check the cap and tighten it until it clicks. Replace the fuel cap with a Genuine Acura replacement cap, if it is missing. Tightening the cap will not make the indicator turn off immediately; it may take several driving trips.

If the indicator remains on past three driving trips, or the fuel cap was not loose or missing, one of the engine's emissions control systems may have a problem. Have the vehicle checked by the dealer as soon as possible.

You should also have the dealer inspect your vehicle if this indicator comes on repeatedly, even though it may turn off as you continue driving.

FUEL FAQS

Are some gasolines better than others? What is "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline"?
In general, Acura recommends that you buy gasoline from high-volume, major name-brand stations.

To prevent the build up of deposits inside your engine and fuel system, it is important to choose fuels that contain effective detergent additives. The detergency of some US gasolines is insufficient to provide protection from such deposits. Acura recommends the use of "Top Tier Detergent Gasolines," where available. Gasoline brands with this designation meet new, voluntary standards and have demonstrated their ability to keep engines clean through a series of demanding tests. Significantly, Top Tier Detergent Gasoline does not contain MMT, a metallic additive that creates deposits in your engine and exhaust system; (see the MMT explanation below). Fuel brands that have achieved the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline designation can be identified through their marketing campaigns, and/or by fueling station signage.

What's that sulfur smell coming from my vehicle?
All gasolines contain trace amounts of sulfur. The human sense of smell can detect sulfur odor in concentrations as low as 3 to 5 parts per million in air.

The exhaust on today's catalyst-equipped Acura vehicles will emit varying degrees of sulfur odor depending on operating temperatures and conditions. On normally operating vehicles, the odor is usually noticeable when the engine is cold, right after deceleration, or after wide-open throttle acceleration.

It may not be possible to eliminate sulfur odor completely due to the various operating conditions. If the sulfur odor is overly bothersome, please contact Acura Customer Relations or your dealer for further guidance or assistance.

Sometimes my Acura seems to idle poorly, hesitate on acceleration or experience hard starting. Why is that?
All parts of the U.S. have winter/summer blended fuel, which is needed to prevent cold or hot start problems. Winter fuels have higher volatility to compensate for cold dense air. Conversely, summer fuels have lower volatility and are less prone to "percolate."

If winter blended fuel is used in warm or hot weather, the higher temperature may cause the fuel to "percolate" within the fuel system.

Summer fuel may not vaporize adequately in cool weather.

These situations are normally localized and last only during a brief period of severe changes in climatic conditions. Normally, no vehicle repairs are needed for these situations.

Buy fuel from high-volume, major name-brand stations.

General Performance Terms

Posted by Xizor

1. Intakes
1.1
Cold Air Intakes

1.1.1
What is a Cold Air Intake (CAI)?
A cold air intake replaces the stock air intake which sucks in air from the engine bay. Engine bay air is hot and less dense, inhibiting the amount of air the engine can use. A CAI is a long tube that moves the air opening to inside the front left fender where it can suck colder, denser air, improving performance.

1.1.2 What are the benefits?
On average a CAI gives a max of 10WHP and can give ~5 ft/lb torque at high RPMs. The CAI will also make a deep growling noise @ WOT.

1.1.2.1 How loud is a CAI?
A CAI is only louder than stock @ WOT. The noise is entirely controlled by the throttle, under normal driving you may never hear that it is installed until you floor it. If your CAI is making noise at idle or weak throttle check to make sure your bolts are tightened and the intake is not vibrating against the chassis.

1.1.3 What are the disadvantages?
Because the air intake opening is closer to the ground it is possible to hydro-lock your engine. Hydro-lock occurs when the CAI opening is submerged in water causing the engine to suck in water instead of air. The engine will seize and repairs can be very costly. A CAI can cause a very slight loss of torque at low RPMs because the long tube extends the initial time it takes for air to reach the throttle body.

1.1.3.1 What is an air bypass valve?
Air bypass valve sit between the intake opening and the throttle body. It virtually eliminates the possibility of hydro-lock by allowing air to be sucked in the CAI if the opening is submerged into water.

1.1.3.1.1 Is an air bypass valve available for a TSX CAI?
No

1.1.4 How long does a CAI take to install?
About 1-2 hours. It requires removing the stock air intake and resonator, then assembling the CAI and installing it. There is two ways to install the CAI, you can either 1) remove the front bumper or 2) remove the front left inside tire well cover.

1.1.5 Who makes Cold Air Intakes for the TSX?
Injen: http://www.injen.com/
K&N: http://www.knfilters.com/

1.1.5.1 What are the differences between manufacturers?
Injen CAI dynos are about 2WHP more than the K&N CAI. The K&N includes a drycharger. Both CAIs come with K&N air filters.

1.1.5.1.1
What is a drycharger?
A drycharger is a fine mesh bag that covers the air filter. This can protect your CAI from sucking up drops of water, which could cause hydro-lock. The actual value of a drycharger is unknown, but it does give peace of mind. K&N sells a drycharger (part #RX-4730DK) that can fit the Injen CAI for ~$30.

1.1.5.2 Where can I find dynos?
Injen: http://www.injen.com/webpages/testi...iles/rd1430.gif
K&N: http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/69-0025tp.jpg

1.1.5.3 Where can I find instructions?
K&N: http://www.knfilters.com/typhoon/69-0025.pdf

1.1.6 How much does a CAI cost?
About $200USD or $250CND shipped.

2. Definations
2.1 What is WHP?
Wheel Horse Power (WHP) is the amount of power an engine can use to rotate the wheels. This is different than horsepower at the flywheel (or crank) because an engine loses power at the drivetrain. WHP is used when referring to a dyno, since actual HP cannot be measured without removing the engine.

2.2 What is WOT?
@ WOT means at wide open throttle, ie: full throttle, pedal to the metal etc.

2.3 What is I/H/E?
Intake/Headers/Exhaust. Typically these aftermarket modifications are done together to improve engine performance

Troubleshooting Tips

How can I obtain the radio code for my Acura anti-theft radio when the card has been lost or misplaced?
Call your Acura dealer and make an appointment with their service department. They will need the radio serial number to retrieve the code. Beginning with model year 1998, stickers showing the radio serial number are placed in the glove compartment. If the serial number is unavailable, the dealer will have to extract the radio to obtain it. This process will take some time, so plan on leaving your vehicle with the dealer. Most dealers charge a labor fee to extract and replace the radio.

Why do I have to take my vehicle to an Acura dealer service department to obtain the radio code?
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. does not provide radio codes over the telephone for security reasons and for the protection of our clients. An Acura dealership will verify automobile ownership before releasing the radio serial number to anyone.

How can I obtain a duplicate key or remote for my Acura?
To obtain an additional or replacement key or remote transmitter, contact your preferred Acura dealer and set an appointment with the service department. You will need to bring: Your vehicle
* The vehicle registration or some other form of ownership documentation, (i.e. insurance policy)
* The key number plate (if available)
* All other keys and remotes that came with your vehicle

Your vehicle Immobilizer System protects your car from theft by using a specific key code unique to your Acura. So if one key or remote transmitter is lost, all the keys/remotes must be brought in for reprogramming with a new, unique code. This process will take some time, so plan on leaving your vehicle with the dealer. Charges will vary based on individual dealer labor rates.

How can I order an Owner's Manual for my Acura?
Visit the Owner's Manual page on Owner Link for order information including a telephone number, mailing address, and link to order a printed copy online.

What should I do if I have a problem with my Acura?
You should contact your closest Acura dealer service department to make an appointment to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired. If your vehicle is inoperable, contact Acura Roadside Assistance, from anywhere in the United States and Canada by calling toll-free at 1-800-594-8500, will set up towing for you. Towing is provided free of charge for any repair that is normally covered under the manufacturer warranty.

What does the maintenance required indicator light mean, and how do I turn it off?
This indicator light is illuminated to remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. Your dealer will reset the indicator light after completing the scheduled maintenance. If the maintenance is done by someone other than your Acura dealer, reset the indicator as follows:

1. Turn off the engine.
2. Press and hold the select and reset buttons next to the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch ON to the number (II) position.
3. Hold the buttons for approximately ten seconds until the indicator resets.

How do I reset the PIN (Personal Identification Number) on my Acura Navigation system?
To change your PIN, first display the Setup screen by pressing the Setup icon located next to the clock on the screen.
1. Select Others then the Personal PIN option.
2. Use the keypad to enter your PIN up to four digits (touch the numbers on the screen, or use the joystick). For security reasons, the numbers will not be displayed, only asterisks will be shown.
3. When you have entered your PIN, select DONE. The display then changes slightly, asking you to re-enter the new PIN. This is to validate the number you have selected.
4. Enter the same number, then select DONE.

Can I upgrade my 1996-1999 Acura model year HDD Navigation System to a DVD system?
No. The systems are not compatible.

Does Acura notify owners of vehicles with Navigation System updates?
No.

When are DVD software updates available, and how can I order it?
Upgraded software will be made available for the Navigation System periodically, usually in the fall of each year. Acura clients may purchase the software updates online or by calling toll free (888) 549-3798.

How can I identify which version of the DVD software I have, and determine if it is the most recent version available?
To identify the version, first display the Setup screen by pressing the Setup icon located next to the clock on the screen. Then select Other. Hit Information and the software version will be displayed.

To determine what the newest DVD software version is available, call toll free at (888) 549-3798 or online.

I have found errors in the Navigation System Database. How do I report them?
If you find errors or omissions in the system database, please report them to Acura_Navi@ahm.honda.com. This data will be forwarded to NAVTECH, our database vendor, and will be included in future DVD updates. Client input for these types of updates is greatly appreciated.

Does our navigation system work outside the United States?
No. At this time, coverage is available only in the 48 contiguous states.

Troubleshooting Tips

Driveway Drips
The bad news is that drops or puddles beneath your Acura may signal trouble. The good news is that discovering the likely source is easy. Just spread a large piece of paper underneath your Acura, leave it overnight, and in the morning check out the color of the drops. The color reveals the source of the problem:

Dark
A dark spot is typically motor oil. It means your engine is leaking oil and needs repair.

Red
Transmission fluid is red. Red spots may indicate that either front or rear automatic transmission seals need replacing.

Green
Green or yellow oily fluid is coolant. This leak could be caused by a bad water pump or a leak in either the radiator or a hose.

Amber
Power steering fluid is amber. An amber stain may indicate a power steering hose or pump leak.

Clear but oily
An oily liquid with little color but a strong odor could be brake fluid.

Clear water
Clear water is no need for concern. It is probably normal condensation from your air conditioner.

Are TSXs production limited to 15,000 units per year?

LED replacement guide

Notes & FAQ

Q. What about the mirror turn signals?
A. The mirror turn signal LEDs are built into the assembly and cannot be replaced without opening the lens. The mirror light piece (part number 34300-SEA-003) retails for 49.56 if you attempt and screw up.

Q. How do I modify a 7443 bulb to a 7440?
A. To modify a 7443 to 7440, bend the dual stage pins into a single stage as shown in this photo. When you take the OEM bulbs out, you will see exactly what you need to do.

Q. How do I install LEDs into the turn signals so as to avoid the "fast" blinker problem?
A. In order to install LED turn signal bulbs, you must add the RL-650 Load Resistor Kit to the modified 7443-to-7440 bulb.

Q. Will installing LEDs into the turn signals without the resistor kit screw anything up?
A. This is under investigation.

Q. Are LEDs dimmer than the OEM bulbs?
A. The LEDs are a bit dimmer than the OEM bulbs, but are still highly visible. The difference is more noticable during the day, of course, but not so much at night.

Q. How do I get to the license plate bulbs?
A. Through the trunk and with very small hands. Don't try to pry the lenses off from outside. The plastic is soft and will crack. Remove the trunk lid lining, and you'll be able to reach the bulbs from there.

Q. One/both/all of my dome LEDs aren't working. What do I do?
A. Switch them round. To quote moda_way, "This has nothing to do with craziness. LEDs have polarity and do require to be installed in a correct position. That's all." Enjoy.
