Extended Warranty

My regular comprehensive warranty is expiring in June/July, and my power train is still good for another 2 years (5 years 100km). I have been given an "offer" by Acura of Canada to purchase an extended warranty. The warranty would cover everything except wear and tear items, some of which the previous warranty covered (rotors, wipers, etc).

I'm trying to figure out if its really worth it by considered some of the major problems we've seen on this board. The 2 that scare me are:

1/ Tranny Failure
2/ Center console/radio failure.

For #1, my power train warranty should cover it. For #2, .. well in that case it may be good to have the warranty? So my questions are...

How much would it cost me to replace the center console/radio if it wasnt covered?

What other problems may I want to protect myself against?

FYI the prices are 1500 for 7year/160km , 1200 for 7 years 130km. I have 45km.

Tranny failure isn't a common enough problem to worry about IMO.

I havn't had the radio failure either so I'm hoping if it hasn't happened by now it won't happen.

Then again those prices aren't bad. How or why were you offered that. I may inquire as well.

See dom's quote. Those are CDN $.

The offer came from my dealer, Acura 2000.

The prices are not bad, but on the other hand if less than $1000 worth of problems will occur then its not worth it. Is the radio repair < $1000?

I don't think anyone ever paid for the radio repair.

Maybe Moda_way can get prices out of the parts catalouge he has.

I bought the 7 year warranty for my car since brand new. I guess i'm paranoid since this is my first Honda/Acura and my last car was a Mercedes.

I remember people saying it was pretty expensive but dont remember the thread. $1,500 sound right? Not sure though.

Seems like some great prices there. I got an offer for an extended warranty for my Cavalier a few months back and best i could get was 7yr/100,000 miles for no less then 1,500 USD

1988 is a long time ago, but way back then Honda knew exactly when the AC condensor (which corroeded due to all that TO salt) on my black Accord would go. The bumper-to-bumper was 48,000 km, except on the AC it was just 40,000 km; the AC went at 43,000 km, with a $700 repair cost, and Honda couldn't even get me a replacement because, suddenly, summer was upon us. And then the alternator kept going, rebuild after rebuild... until I bought a new unit.

In my mind, the TSX is just too sophisticated a car to NOT have an extended warranty - stability control, traction control, HO-PO engine, ...and we do a lot of mileage, and TO has a lot of salt.

My center console display just failed at 61K. They quoted me $1200 for the replacement. However, Honda Canada was great, and agreed to cover the cost. I only need to pay $85 for the instal.

You also get roadside assistance with the extended warranty which makes it a little sweeter...

So is it wise to get the Extended Warranty? I'm about to finalize everything on my new car, so I'm wondering if I should or not.

I got the extended warranty with my 06 5AT Navi w/navi coverage. shit if that went out after 4 years, i'd be really pissed. I didnt have a lot that went wrong wtih my 95 civic when i had it, but when things did go wrong they were usually big, like a cracked radiator for one. the piece of mind, even knowing honda/acura are some of the most reliable cards on the road, is what i bought wtih that 7 year warranty.

Depends on how much it is. I neogiate it to $750Cdn for 7yr/160000km, so why not.

I got the same/similar offer in the mail last week. Unfortunately their system is too stupid to realize I bought my car after the 60,000km warranty limit, so technically I couldn't buy the extended warranty. LOL.

Crisco: Nav or Non-Nav? And what exactly happened?

I know down here in the US, you can shop around for an acura extended warranty. Guys on the CL board would call around and get different price for the same coverage...

Oh, and the higher the mileage on the car, the higher the cost of the warranty, so don't sit on the fence too long if you're thinking about getting an extended warranty..

<--- not a gambler usually, but I'm going w/o a warranty in another 5K miles...

I bought an extended warranty in the finance office while purchasing the car (with no intention of doing so). It was ~$1200US for 7yr, 100,000mi.

But get this ---- the dealership will refund the money if I never use the extended warranty.

I have an 06 NAVI 5AT. I bought the Acura extended warranty for bumper to bumper coverage 6yrs/120k miles for $1500. It includes roadside assistance and free loaner car. I would like to keep this car until it is paid for. I drive 20-25k yr so I wanted something that would cover me until the 5 yr loan is paid. I drove primarily VWs before this car and they all had a tendency to start having lots of little things break after the car hit 80k. Prior to that, I drove GM and Chrysler products which had the same thing happen at around 60K. Even with Honda/Acura's great reliability rep, I had to cover my butt considering my experience with other brands. I think that is a great price. My Mom paid that for a 6yr/60k on her Impala. The fee is refundable pro/rated if you sell the car.

Someone want to shed some light on how an entire center console fails???? That seems like something you'd expect from BMW or MB, NOT acura....what gives?

Is it 6MT or 5AT's with potential transmission problems?

On extend warrenties I always figure that the "insurance company" is making a profit on the deal having calculated the probable cost of repairs, their likelihood, and nice profit for the dealer too.

I prefer to bank the money (or better still pay the loan down faster) that I don't spend on the extended warrenty. My experience with Honda's has proven to me that I get a good 2 to 3 years of use after I have paid of the loan off before major repair expenses. Even then paying $1000 or $2000 for a "major" repair is still cumulatively cheaper than loan payments of $250 -$550 per month.

If it gives you peace of mind that is worth something -- $1000-$2000? Only you can answer that one.

sell/trade-in before you're out of warranty. there'll most likely be newer and better by then!

Sure will give me a piece of mind. Though I hear from peopel that Honda/Acura cars are very reliable, I rather spend the extra for extended warranty because I got burnt with my last car. Before you say 'oh acura/honda is more reliable then a Mercedes' you are or can be correct. I spent close to $10K fixing problems out of warranty before I trashed the C36.

I don't want to see people post 'Oh, Acura/Honda's are more reliable and Mercedes is not'. I KNOW THAT ALREADY!!!

Yup. Parts of TSX won't be cheap because it has to be import from Japan. A remote side mirror switch may cause you $200 to replace instead of $60 for a USDM Accord. So it is worth to spare out a couple hundred bucks for a piece of mind if you planning to own the car for more than 5 yr.

Extended Warranty

I got this letter 2 weeks ago regarding the extended warranty and in the letter they mentioned the last date to buy it is end of March. Last week i went to the dealer "Acura Sherway" for Oil change and I saw the manager there who is responsible on those warranties and he told me the price is 1203.00 cad for extra 3 years or 130000 km or 1293.00 cad for 4 years/130000 km and if i sign with them he will give me 150.00 cad discount but he mentioned everything is covered but not the radio. So now i am thinking is it worth it? Can anyone in Toronto verify this with his dealer about the radio coverage?

If i remmeber correctly, the radio is covered..it's the NAVI that is not covered under extended warranty.

Call and ask another dealer.

2004 didn't come with NAVI in Canada and Acura Canada is targeting 2004 for the extended warranty so i think this manager knows what he is talking about.

I'm glad fdl has brought this up, since this it has been bothering me for a while.

What exactly is a wear n' tear item? I know for sure that tires/wheels/windows/brake pads/fog lights/wipers/wiper arms/suspension won't be covered. But what would be?

While it's nice to occasionally hear that Acura will cover out-of-warranty items, I doubt that would apply to 95% (if not, 99.9%) of TSX owners.

According to my dealer everything is covered but not the radio and they charge 25.00 cad as deductible.

I bought my 05' TSX 6MT in september and I was talked into the 6yr. 100,000 mile extended warranty, because of the fact that it was refundable...., now i'm still not sure if that means if I don't use it then I recieve my money back..., or does it mean that I can walk back into the dealership at any point within that term/period and request my money back, just because I decided that I don't want it anymore...., or does it mean both?? I know I should just ask the dealership again, but I was just wondering if anyone was in the same position as me and happened to know off hand, what the exact terms are.

- The only reason that I ask is because, I am def. thinkin about modifiying my engine, which would technically void my warranty. (I understand that is a topic within itself) But if this were the case there would be no reason for me to continue on with the extended warranty, and I would pursue recieving my money back. The thing was, the extended warranty was much cheaper when I bought the car compared to purchasing it after i walked out the door. Thanks in advance for any comments

It does for 2006 vehicles. Before that, it was a 3yr/70k? warranty.
