Engine Oil

Hi all,

I am deciding if I should switch to synthetic oil. I'm at 96k miles/ 100k km. I have used dino oil the whole time with 8k Km intervals. The problem is sometimes I have to work in the middle of nowhere, up to 2-3 weeks at time. There are only small shops in the area and I don't think they have a good choice of synthetic oils. Sometimes time/mileage doesn't allow to get the oil changed when I want to, but I don't want to wait until I'm back in town before I can get the oil changed. I was wondering if anyone of you know if there are any effects of using synthetic oil for a period of time, then switching back to dino oil later?

It's my understanding that when switching between oils like that, synthetic to non-synthetic and back, that a full flush is necessary to make sure all of the previous oil is out of the engine. So, that might be a pain and/or costly to do often. Perhaps someone with more experience can add to this.

Just use Mobil EP for the extended drain interval so you don't have to keep switching back and forth due to those long trips. If you really have to switch back, then just switch. No flushing is needed. The synthetic will do an excellent job cleaning the internal.

Exactly.

Flushing between syn/dino changes is PURE profit for the shop suggesting it, or, pure misinformation from the person propogating that information.

Get any decent synthetic oil and run it for 8-10K miles and don't worry about it.
