Drove the STI, SRT-4, and Evo today

So me and my buddy have this ritual of taking a day to go and test drive as many cars as we can. He works for Jaguar so of course he knows the ins and outs. "Stroking" as the car business calls it. Our mission today was the 04 WRX STI, the neon srt-4, lancer evo, and mazda rx-8......what a day, huh
The STI was first. After a bit of convincing the salesman to even let us sit in the seats we were able to take it for a rare test drive. The miles read 1.2 miles. Let me just say i have a new respect for that fine piece of machinery. The torque, Hp, turbo was out of this world. Reminded me of a C4 911 and a M3 in one. Unbelievable. The salesman let us open her up on the Jersey back highways. Even the interior was suprisingly tasteful. The all wheel drive system is gripping. By far the best of the day and i want one to sit next to my TSX in the garage
The Lancer was predictable. Sometimes sluggish but other times can really pick up and go. Interior sucks(STI is much better even though no radio). Handling was awesome and the torque kicked ass. In my opinion after all options added(which are needed) a bit over priced. No way can keep up with the STI.
The Mazda was beatiful. Eye candy and thats it. The car's looks, lines, interior and personality make it what it is. And,yes, the craftsmanship can be praised. Great engine and has a great growl to it. Just not that impressed with power. Dont get me wrong, very quick and responsive but much more out there for that money. The dude was ready to sell it to us for 500 over invoice!!!!
The SRT-4 ws the most suprising. I used to have had a 5.0 mustang GT and that NEON would have given me a run for my money.......0-60 in 5.5 !!!!! Very cheap interior, of course(dodge), Turbo guage and other guages are pretty cool. BUT....very very quick(not anyhting like lancer or STI). i would actaully consider driving it. But in the end its a Neon. and for 21,000....pretty damn good
i know this is our Acura TSX forums but i had to share my experiance. I love the mixture of personalities of out TSX but the WRX STI is UNREAL.........

i test drove an rx-8, it was awesome, 9,000rpm redline, 100mph in 4th gear, fun stuff. however, i drive a 1.9L TDI volkswagon....thus, the pickup of a gas engine is quite a thrill to me, and they all seem beyond compare to my car.

Great review thanks

hey so what do you consider faster and much better car overall?
STI?

I would probably say the STI but the price is what turn meoff about the car... I was thinkin maybe $29-31 max would be a good price for the car...

Out of those cars i drove, definately the STI for value, performace, styling
Yea the STI with the 3000 premium over sticker is 32,000 but you can get the dealer to drop that pointless premium

sounds like you had fun but you are the first to say the STi is better performer than EVo...other ppl and ALL the car mags have times that show the EVO will school the STi on a track and handling as well..much more aggressive car..the STi is easier to live with but not as performance oriented...

Most mags I've read say that it totally depends on the track. The EVO being slightly better in the twisties and the STI on the longer straights.

i think its b/c the STi has slightly better top end? but handling dynamics the EVO is better...but cant go wrong with both cars if you want performance...but i admit i've had an infatuation with the EVO's ever since EVO IV

Wussy-mobile. My friend's 450hp supercharged Mustang is much more fun...because I don't have to maintain and I get to go for rides.

I too think the STI is an awesome machine. I dont know if the EVO can take it, every mag article i have read has said the STI eats the EVO alive. Are we talking about stock vs stock?
In an issue of import tuner the editor took the evo to the track and beat every challenger except a hooked up camaro. But his time on a practice run later in the day was faster than the camaros that beat him earlier.
I like the look personally of the EVO over the STI but i have nothing but the upmost respect for the STI. Although it doesnt come with a radio lol which sux ass. Oh well i have an old 8 track ill install on it will post pics of the install.

Thanks for the interesting reviews. Those cars all rock but none of them are really practical. The Neon is a shocker though. I wouldn't be surprised if it started to eat into Civic/RSX sales. And for all you RX-8 lovers out there, that is one ugly ass car. 7 MPG too.

If I'm between 16 and 21 and I'm looking for a sporty but fast car, I'm buying either a RSX-S, Celica GT-S, MazdaSpeed Protege or Sentra SE-R. There ai'nt no way in hell I'd be caught dead driving around in a Neon (Dogge SX in Canada) I don't care if it was quicker than the Enzo.

Edit: Scratch the Sentra, it looks liek ass too.

100 mph surprises you? When I took the saab 9-3 for a test drive the sales guy was begging me to push it. I got to 100 mph on the onramp to a highway. Its not uncommon for me to cruise on the highway at 80-90mph , so what 10 more mph?

I guess what I am saying is I dont consider 100 mph THAT fast.

fdl 90MPH is 144kmph

100MPH is 160km's, while easily obtainable is still pretty fast for a test drive IMO. I can count the times I've been to 160km in my TSX on one hand.

In most places here in the States, you stand a fair chance of being arrested and immediately carted off to jail if you get clocked going that speed (or even 90 mph for that matter).

Also, accident survivability falls dramatically to near zero at speeds above 80 mph.

Just food for thought...

Mags and reviews compare the Evo with the WRX.....not the STI version. The STI is 300hp while the Evo i think is 270. Driving both within 2 hours of eachother the EVo will eat the STI`s dust. No one should ever say the Evo has a chance. Add some mods and then you have a killer car in the Evo.

And 100mph is NOT fast...but when you have a sissy liitle salesman in the seat next to you worring about the RPM`s exceeding 2000 its a liitle hard to do that. But the WRX salesman told us to completely open it up, he didnt care. AWESOME
especially when dumping the clutch and downshifting !!!!

I test drove the new 04 TL and did 120 on rt17 south in jersey..my dealer loved it.. if the police dept hadnt called the dealer a few days earlier and warned them about the test drive speeds, i would have gone faster

My TSX has been at the dealer getting its stupid rear middle folding seat fixed ( it pops out with weak pressure to the sides and rips the leather), so my bro lent me his 2002 WRX no STI. Hes done alot of work to it so its up to 260 hp at the tires, and it is a damn fine car. no luxery items, all plastics to preserve weight, but the performance is beautiful, awd on corners is intense. the WRX is a high quality vehicle in my oppinion, but when i got my TSX back, i was quite happy even. took a day to get used to the soft clutch again, but even with the huge difference in power, i love the feel of my TSX.
on occation i get to drive my pops 98 s/c'd Cobra around, that is an intense right, but has no comfort compared to the TSX. It does rape every car I've ever seen in Calgary tho, which is always good
