The Dreaded 90 day wait

It seems that no dealer in the Chicago area has a 6MT w/navi on the lot as of Christmas. I've visited 3 dealers in person and the websites of a couple others all show '06 inventory as 5AT. Two dealers have told me that if I want a 6MT/navi/RBP/ebony that it must be ordered and it will take 90 days. My questions: Does it cost a dealer anything to do this ordering other than paying taxes if it sits on the lot? Could the dealer use this against me in trying to negotiate a price?

I figure there's no way to know the value of my trade-in 90 days after the order date, so I could only negotiate that at the time of purchase and they could stick it to me because nobody else would have my 6MT/navi/RBP/ebony. Should I just wait and hope somebody gets one in (like JohnnyCNote, beautiful car by the way)?

^^^I don't think it costs the dealer one penny more to order a particular TSX from the factory. They could just make the car you want part of their regular allotment in an upcoming order.

You can negotiate the price of the car ahead of time without factoring in your trade-in. In fact, you should. Negotiate the price of the car, then worry about the trade-in value. And don't be too sure the car you order won't be desired by someone else.

If you can wait, order what you want. In the meantime, keep looking.

Good luck.

When I test drove an AT '06 at Pauly Acura a few weeks ago, they said they will have a black MT TSX coming in soon. He was suppose to give me a call when it's in but I haven't heard from him yet. You may want to check them out. They are located in highland park i think (all the way up I-94, pass NorthBrook).

I negotiated a deal which included my trade. At the time, although the dealer didn't have what I wanted in stock ('06 DGP auto w/navi) he thought he could do an "electronic swap" for one already enroute. Turns out it was too late to get either of the cars he had in mind, so he just tacked mine on to his next regular order.

So instead of getting my car in mid January it won't arrive until mid March. But I've got a signed sales order listing the value of my trade. My expectation is that - barring sonething catastrophic happening to my present ride - the dealer will honor the price quoted.

If not, I'll be shopping around for a new dealer.

I can't imagine that they would honor a price they decided on four months ago; my dealer's trade-in quote only lasts for 10 days or 100 miles. That's the current sticking point in my deal... they quoted me a trade price over the phone, but I'm afraid they're going to renege when I get there to pick up my car (assuming that ever happens, cuz it seems like it will never come in).

Bah, humbug.

This is my fear exactly. Holding out on the trade-in can make them just as much $ as if they added it on your new TSX. After all, what are you going to do? Wait another 90 days for Joe down the street to get his in? Carmax only honors their quotes for 7 days. So far I've told dealers to call me when they get one in.

I'm in the same boat, except they did do an electronic trade, but for one that's currently being built, so its still going to be 4-6 weeks.

What I was told regarding my trade-in was that as long as it's in the same condition as when they appraised it and there's no major damage, etc., we would be all set.

sidebar: when my girlfriend ordered her 06 Scion tC, it was going to take 4 weeks to arrive. 3 days before she is set to pick it up, she gets in an accident with her old car. Thankfully it was still driveable & she wasn't hurt. It was the other person's fault, and they ended up totaling the car, so she got a check for 2x of what the dealer appraised the trade at. So I guess in some instances, the car coming back in different condition when the new car comes in isn't always a bad thing. :-)

I too am waiting on my new TSX since they didn't have any 06 MT NBP/Ebony on the lot. No 05 MT TLs either. Seems the MT are hard to get a hold of, however the time they say it takes to get the car in his very conservative, at least that is what the dealer I bought my car at said. They said it should come in between the 10-15 but he said it may be there a couple days sooner. Good luck with your trade in

Join the club! I too am waiting for an '06 navi/6mt in the Chicago area....since September! But I want a specific color too, and I'd rather wait for the new car than get a "deal" on last years model.

We should form our own TSX support group!

Absolutely. The 06 has a bunch of new accessories for only a couple hundred dollars more if you can stand the new rims. If your specific color is red/ebony, Ryan at McGrath says he can get it by end of January. If not.....

Between the time you negotiated your trade value and the time you actually trade the car in, you will have piled up considerably more miles on the car. I would bet the dealer would be very resistant to honoring that original price.

the sales order is not binding on the dealer's end. it should say that in there somewhere. if not, thats awesome for you!

Looks like we're all fighting for the same car. I've been scouring Chicago for a MT/nav without luck.

I'm pondering between a special order or just buying an AT--haven't decided yet.

Maybe we can do a group buy!

I think the AT would remove most of the driving fun out of this car. My rule of thumb is that ATs don't belong in 4-cylinder cars. The highlight of the TSX is the engine and MT, the rest of the car is a jewel of course. Oddly as much as I like MT, I would consider the TL with an AT.

i have the AT and it is still a fun car. i'm not saying that the MT isn't more fun, but getting the auto doesnt remove the fun factor from this vehicle. and this is coming from an AVID manual driver. if the car was my purchase and not my gf's, it would have been a manual.
