Does Vtec really guzzle THAT much gas?

I just filled up my tank 3 days ago and have 34.6 miles on my TSX. I did a launch against my friends Celica the other night and today I launched to turn left on a green light (late to class). Later I was in a rush to drop off my girlfriend and I sped-stopped-sped-stopped while engine braking, but never hitting Vtec. On the way back I hit vtec a couple times and I looked at my gas and saw that almost 1/8 of the tank was gone!!!

My question is, does Vtec really ruin the milage that badly? I know braking isn't helpful on your milage either. Does everyone notice the same thing?

The gas guage in the TSX is not linear, so dont read too much into it. The first 1/4 goes by a lot quick than the last 1/4, etc.

VTEC opens up the higher lift, higher duration cams profile at higher engine speeds. This means that more air/fuel mixture is being allowed into the combustion chamber and thus more gas is being used up. How significant is the difference, I can't be sure, but if you're driving the car like a race car, expect gas mileage to plummet.

And yes, like fdl said, the gas gauge is not linear, but will correct itself periodically.

I usually fill up once every week and a half. 10-11 days, and I tend to have a heavy foot at times, and my town is full of stop signs. Seems pretty good to me?

Hah! The good old days.

Or even back in 1997, when it was $1.15/gallon for premium.

I don't get people that complain about gas mileage. If you want a car that delivers great gas mileage then get a car that advertises great gas mileage as a key selling point.

If you are happy about a car that can give you high rpm surges to 60, and then complain about gas mileage as a result of that, well what can I say, it just sounds stupid.

I hope it's not that accurate! My tank is at 50% and I've only driven 110 miles!! We'll see how the remaining 50% goes...

What do you guys do, wait till it runs out of gas then coast to the most expensive station in town?? Once, when I let it get to where the low fuel light came on I put in $25. Normally it's only about $20 worth give or take a dollar. And that's $2 a gallon premium. How much are you paying per gallon that it takes $35 to fill up??

Don't know where you live, but $2 premium is the very low end for the US. National Average (per AAA website: http://www.ouraaa.com/news/news/fuel.html) is currently $2.22. Much higher in some places.

why cant someone want a quick car with good gas mileage? i believe honda might make the new nsx a hybrid, exhibiting supercar performance with good gas mileage. wat a concept.

Exactly... buy that car then. You didn't buy a car that advertises both performance and great gas mileage, so deal.

1. Since I had my CAI installed I've been travelling into VTEC territory more often and have noticed that it sucks a lot more gas.

2. Gas here in Southeastern PA currently ranges from $2.15 to 2.35 but that might be a totally different story next week the way things seem to be going.

3. I can't believe the beating this dude's putting on his engine with only 34.6 miles on it! I guess his car isn't meant to last more than a few years?

My old Camry was the opposite of the TSX -- I could go almost 100 miles before the gauge would move off the Full mark, but the gauge dropped like a rock over the last 1/4 tank

My last couple fillups here in San Diego area were at $2.69 for premium. No complaints here though -- I drive like I'm in a gas-guzzling contest

exact same for me.went to 540km once but didnt want to risk running out completely.someone said you can squeeze 600km out of a tank so that mean it can run with the needle on empty for another 60km.anyone want to try?

damn i remember like 5 years ago it would cost me like $60 to fill my f-150 when gas was 45cent a liter and id only get 400km out of a 80l tank.people with truck must be spending like $500 a month on gas now

Yeah I was around 14-15 back in 98 but I remember going to get gas with my parents and they'd complain when the prices hit $1 a gallon, Costco gas cost around 70 cents a gallon back when everyone was getting SUV's.

Again I'm not complaining about my milage, I just thought it would be a little better in the city? I don't even think I'm getting the rated 19mpg either way I love this car and it definately gets better milage than anything my parents own.

I pay $2.12 for V-Power + 5% off Shell gas with my Visa, so around $2 a gallon for me. I finally past the 100 Post mark!!!

I agree. When I have an extra $90,000 lying around for an exotic third car, I don't want to spend my hard-earned on any more gasoline than I have to.

Incredible that it's been only 6 years. I don't blame the executive branch entirely for high gas prices, but you'd think that the least we could get out of invading and taking over an oil-rich country is cheap fuel!!

I'm just wondering how much gas Vtec takes versus driving without passing 4500 RPM all the time. I bet it would sound stupid if I bought a Sports car and complained about how much gas it takes, but one. this isn't a sports car, 2 I think the great milage is a factor in buying the TSX for me since it does a pretty damn good job of not wasting gas for a sedan.

$2.519 for a gallon of premium at Costco here in SF Bay Area. That was last weekend....probably up another dime this week. And this is the least expensive gas around!!!
