Do you consider this acceptable oil consumption?

I drive 100 miles round trip to work averaging 80-85mph 5 days a week. I usually shift gears around 3-4k rpms and occasionally hit 5-6k rpms. Would you consider 1/2qt every 4,000 miles good/bad/normal under those conditions? Thanks

that sounds normal. If it was 1/2 quart every 1000 miles id be a little more concerned. What type of oil do you use?

According to the guidelines for oil consumption that everyone seems to use, 1/2 quart over 4000 miles is low and nothing to worry about.

My personal opinion is different, but opinions don't matter to an automobile manufacturer that provides warranties.

Make sure you top up your oil so that it is ALWAYS above the middle of the 2 dots.

1/2 liter for 4000 miles isn't bad at all -- definitely w/in the normal range.

My car burned 1L/1000km *650 miles* but that was cured with a new short block under warranty.

Keep an eye on it, and as aaronng said, keep it at least above the bottom dot, preferrably at the top dot.

are you suppose to check the oil after the car has cooled down (like 30 min. after you turn off your car?), or are you suppose to check oil right after you turn off your car?

b/c i noticed that if i check my oil right after i turn off my car it isnt at the top dot, but after i check after waiting 30 min. it is at the top dot...

which way should i check it?

I prefer to check after about 15 minutes. But yeah, if you check straight away after driving, the level will be lower because some of the oil is in the other parts of the engine and will take some time to drain back down into the sump.
