DIY: brake pads

I'm planning to change the brake pads (finally at 45k miles), the question is, I've been hearing about this antisqueal thing that you're supposed to apply. What is it (is it just something like anti-seize?), and where exactly do I apply it to?? Pictures would be great...

Also, anything to be aware of, or hints?

Do a search for brake pads in the tire, wheels & suspension area. There are many threads that discuss this very topic.
