did i break in my car bad?

so far my car has 505 miles on. THe first 465 miles was basically easy going city driving. Today i felt that i needed to vary the rpms and speed so i hopped onto the freeway.

The entire time i was going about 70-90 mph. A lot of the time i accelerated quickly to 80 and left it there for a minute or so then let it slowly drop to back to 70 then accelrate back to 90 and let it sit tehre for a while. Is that good way to break in the car?

I also went up to 110 on a down hill and i hit about 5.5k RPMs...is that ok?

I wouldn't worry about it. It doesn't sound like you've been abusive at all.

Speaking from experience, brand new cars see pretty hard driving during their PDI when they roll off the truck at the dealer.

Above all else, it is important to avoid prolonged use at high RPM when breaking in, and wait until the proper time for the first oil change.

Your TSX will be fine.

You didn't hurt the car. To break in you should vary the RPMs and slowly take it higher and higher in the rev range as miles accumulate. So, you did just that. You varied your speed, you went easy on it when it was new, and now you've hit 5500 rpm at 500 miles on the odometer. Sounds to my like you're doing it right.

I assume you have the AT. You may want to mix in a few full throttle low RPM runs (in SS only so the tranny doesn't downshift).

Here is a good reference thread on break-in:https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1443

Dude, you're not supposed to go over 60 mph during break-in.

I'm sure it's probably fine, but not something I would do regularly during break-in.

When you said you varied your rpm's, what was the max rpm of that range? If you were only going up to say...4.5k, and then suddenly you make the jump to 5.5k, that could be bad.

Also, 110 mph is way too fast for break-in...that, and anything over 100 mph is considered wreckless

"not supposed to" is an opinion. it's not a real rule. everyone breaks cars in differently. and yet they all seem to last pretty much the same amount of time. go figure.

I hit about 90 once during the break in (around mile 400). Otherwise it sounds similiar to what you did on yours.

I also put 1800 miles on it in the first four days.

So yeah, if anyone's engine is going to be screwed, it'll be mine. I was gentle with it though the rest of the time and tried to vary rpm/speed as much as I could, but circumstances out of my control led to the unconvential break in.

Don't worry. Proper break in means reducing drivetrain and engine shock while the parts are running in. Accelerating from 70-110 is fine. It's the high RPM starts from 0-60mph that damages the drivetrain.

In the factory, the engine is probably dyno'd to test for minimum power output like what BMW does.

4000rpm in 6th gear is about 90mph actually

There is a vehicle speed sensor in your car (that's how your spedometer works), but it is not normally logged.

It logs if you overrev, or if you deploy the airbags. Your car being an auto "shouldn't" be able to overrev.

Personally, I was trying not to go over 3000 rpm during break in, which in 6th is about 65ish...

ck123, you can search this forum for the huge debate in running in and also on oil consumption after that. I noticed that those with high oil consumption tend to run their engine in on the freeway.

My own car, was run in the city for the first 400km, and then I had to go on the freeway for a 600km trip. Plus I had 1 misshift that put my engine at 7000rpm in 2nd gear. Even with that abuse, my engine is still running and consuming NO oil (I didn't see the level change) between the 6 month/7000km service. I even took my car to the track once for a total of 90 minutes (strictly 4000 to 7300rpm) and at the end of the day, still consumed NO oil. My engine had no smoke, while another guy's who parked in the pit next to me had bad oil consumption of 1L in that same 90 minute duration.

So don't worry, your little acceleration up to 110mph won't cause damage as long as you don't shock your engine/drivetrain.

btw, with regards to gas mileage, i'm just starting to get better mileage and I'm probably at my 7 or 8k mark. It's only been 6 months and I've had 1 oil change.

How long is the log kept?

(and no, I haven't done anything bad...i stay about 200 rpm's from redline, and I never mis-shift)
