Delayed auto transmission shift??

Hello Everyone.
Recently got a 2005 AT with 80K miles. Noticed that the gears usually shift between 2300-2500 RPM (I'm usually very light on the gas pedal).
Compared to my other cars, it feels like the shift is delayed. Is this normal (what you experience) of it is really delayed?
Thanks in advance.

No delay. The TSX has a relatively low torque, high RPM, engine. You don't want it shifting early.

I drive in 'S" Mode, and generally shift between 3,000 and 3,500 -- and around 5,000 when I want a little more pep. But, if I want to scoot, I shift at around 6,800 RPM's -- with WOT. That gets me both into VTEC -- and also into the next gear before the fuel shutoff hits.

For a visual of this, play the scene in STAR WARS (IV, aka ANH) when Han Solo makes the jump to light speed from Tatooine. "Folks, strap yourselves in,...!"

I find the shift point varies considerably with the terrain, and my use of the throttle. Recently, it has (in full auto mode, that is) waited until about 3000 - 4000 RPM to shift, due to my holding the gas down further. Wheeee! But when I'm "in chauffeur mode," it shifts rather comfortably to ensure smooth driving. My sweetheart likes it that way.

I really do like this tranny....

I like that, "chauffeur mode". I need to start driving more in that mode. Then, I ought to have fewer passengers that say, "Stop the car and let me out!" or "You are making me nervous". But, then -- they only say that on mountain roads.

Off topic; the first time I did a stall with my wife in a Cessna 172, she said basically the same thing. I told her, "You know where the door is".

The tranny is one of many things that make the TSX exceptional; whether you have the manual or the automatic.

But, I love the automatic with the SS -- it is wonderful in the mountains. Not only on the curves, but in taking advantage of the passing zones as well.

Do you guys experience an occasional harshness when shifting form 1 to 2? In auto it does this for me and it's pretty jerky. Even in SS sometimes I find I have to go to 4-5RPM to get a smoothness in shifting.

Yes. I thought it would smooth out after I did drain and fill of the tranny fluid but it did not. I think it is just the way the car shifts at low RPMS or if the car is cold. More throttle will get you a higher RPM shift which does shift crisper but then the MPG's suffer... Oh well : )

I had my transmission, torque convertor and motor mounts replace under certified warranty at 96,000 miles

Yup, I get harshness going from 1st to 2nd as well on my 2004. At first it bugged me but I've since learned to let go of the pedal when the car is warming up and it's shifting from 1 to 2. You can barely feel the shift that way and I kinda feel like I'm being nicer to my tranny that way while it's warming up.

Once warmed up, there's still a very noticeable shift but it's by no means harsh. It's just not as seamless as you might observe on a Camry or Corolla (which are obviously designed for more conservative driving).

I do notice that the shifts are even more abrupt when in SS mode. In SS mode, I think the shifts are deliberately faster for a more sporting feel.

With my car being boosted and it being cold there is a noticable hiccup from first to 2nd in the morning. It also has to do with the shift occuring around the Vtec engagment point (~3500 rpm's). If I gas it and the shift occurs higer in the rev range is it way smoother.

you could possibly remedy the hard shifting by switching to an atf that has more friction modifiers. if i recall, amsoil and castrol's atf contain lots of friction modifiers. AND it is ABSOLUTELY okay to use other atf other than HONDA ATF.

I had a new transmission put in at 96,000 miles and it shifts at around 2000 rpms. seems normal for this car.

2006AT

1->2 is always a bit more pronounced than the other gears for me as well. i would never put 1st gear up to 5k+ though in an AT, the engine braking is very sever and borderline dangerous. i always shift 1->2 at around 2.25K for a smooth shift, if i need to accelerate fast and get going i leave it to 2nd/3rd for the most part (depending on speed).

Almost 129k miles here and the transmission still feels great. No delay as far as I can tell. Every now and then I'll get a firmer than normal shift, but I think it's more DBW related than the transmission itself.
