Am I just an agressive driver? Anyone else having this experience?

Now that I think about it I had a pretty low average MPG with my last set of wheels... I'm beginning to think that it's a driving style issue more than a vehicle gas performance issue.

 

I have been a fairly consistent 23mpg or so. It's pretty disappointing, though I have to admit that I am subjected to 90% city driving. It's gone up to about 26mpg after longer trips... this is all self measured.

 

I get about 20mpg and i'm 90% city, it sucks!

 

Come on I have never gotten less than 30 mpg in my six speed--you guys must be in constant race mode.

 

That is awful for a 4-cylinder.

 

i never gone below 23MPG but i do mostly suburbia driving...also i hardly accelerate hard, might be your driving style

 

Just curious -- what is your mix of highway/city driving, and what RPM's do you typically shift at?

 

23 mpg in city/suburbs. 28 on the hiighway. This is based on 820 miles of driving, highway was two trips for a total of 280 miles.

 

it will get better as your car break in and ecu settle. i got good mpg only after a good few tank....

 

21-22 mpg.. 90% city - AC on all the time (This is Houston )

BTW, 1SickLex.. Not to pick on you, but you own an IS300, right? That car gets horrible gas mileage for the amount of power it produces. I mean, a BMW330i gets better gas mileage!

For a 200HP 4-cylinder engine, I'd say 22/30mpg (city and highway, respectively) is outstanding.

 

24mpg in traffic that used to give me 26mpg on my Integra.

 

A consistent 8.5 litres / 100k (calculated manually) over 5 tanks so far.
Which is just as good as my 1.8l Mazda Protege

 

I forgot to mention that I'm driving an AT and have a congested commute M-F, AC on all the time. But my question is... does this have to do with driving "style"?

Yep, I'm around 20-21 mpg, 80% city, 20% getting on the interstate for 2 to 20 mile trips. Only 1500 miles in three months. AC on all the time.. near Miami, FL. The temp is a cool 81 right now, but only because it's raining.

I live just about 3 miles from work and accelerate fairly agressively. What's the point of having the car if you're not having fun with it?

If you do drive agressively, with jack-rabbit starts from a standstill and heavy braking at traffic lights, then your fuel economy will suck. High speeds don't help much, either. If you use the sportshift a lot (for agressive driving), well... just add that into the mix as well.

What type of fuel are you using, and how many miles are on your car?

I'm getting shit mileage I'm sure. Since I swore off of math ten years ago, I'll disclose that my friggin car eats gas like a mutha!
I filled up two days ago and in a mere 68 kilometers, I have lost a quarter tank. I'm seriously thinking of taping over the fuel gauge, leaving just the "low fuel" light visible. BTW, I'm rarely on the highway and I do a bit of Juan Pabloing on most days, so its all my fault.

 

I average around 22mpg in my 6MT. I drive aggressivly alot, but not all the time. I can see how 19mpg is very possible .

Actually..I have found that highway driving makes my mileage worse...because I drive very fast on the highway. Cruising at 4500 rpms for 30 minutes isnt great for gas mileage.

Some dude actually asked me if I'd had the car in sixth yet. Shit man, I put it in fifth when I hit 70kmh and the tach reads 2100RPMs. At 100kmh, in sixth, the damn tach is almost at 3K

Yep.. my miles per gallon sucks, but I'd challenge anyone in here in a gallons per month contest.

 

YA, I never ever drive 100km/h on the highway..I am usually around 130...or more if its the 407 (our toll highway here in toronto). I could really use a 7th gear...or a taller 6th. I believe the 5th gear in the 5AT is taller than the 6th gear in the 6MT.

 

It is. And that's the thing I hate most about this car. Close-ratio gearing is all well and good, but there's no reason 6th needs to be anywhere near 5th. Sheesh....

 

Yep, the way the gauge drops to 3/4 full after 40 miles or so is annoying, but the progress slows as you get more toward empty. The opposite was true of my old Camry -- I could go up to 100 miles and it would still be on Full -- then it would drop like a rock thereafter. I'm averaging 21-22mpg in my 6MT with A/C on most of the time, 80% city driving and a bona fide lead foot (shifting around 4500+k and I'm up near 7000k rpm once or twice a day )
So overall, I'm very happy with the fuel economy. I'm certain that I could be in the upper 20's with less A/C use and a more moderate driving style. Actually, I've kept it under 4000k for almost a half tank because I'm curious to see what numbers I can get -- I'll report back when I run the numbers.

 

OK, I feel like a freak getting over 30 mpg. I accelerate quickly and shift around 4500 rpm. When getting on highway I like to go all the way up to 7000. I drive mostly expressway however and rarely do a tank driving around town but I would say 20% of miles are city driving. 23 miles one way to work at 65 mph to 70 mph. My steady trip mileage is about 32 mpg at 65 mph.

 

i've switched to probably 60 percent freeway driving and my milage has increased to about 25mpg with average freeway speed 80 and fairly aggressive around town driving. One thing I did do is up my tire pressures to 35 all around.

 

Do you have a 6MTor 5AT? 5AT gets better mileage.

Also, there have been posts about the trip computer not accuratly calculating mileage...try doing it manually and see if you get the same results.

If most of your driving is at 65 your milieage is going to be pretty good, even if you redline it to get on the highway.

 

Yeah, I don't think there is an accurate gas mileage calculating trip computer - it's inflating your number. Try calculating it yourself... I'd be interested to hear the comparison.

Maybe I'll go check my tire pressure. Anyone know how much of a factor that is??

 

A couple of weeks ago I moderated my driving to see how much gas mileage I could attain on a tank of gas. My driving is typically 1:1 in city and highway and I usually get 24-25 MPG (highest was 30 MPG and lowest was 22 MPG). I consciously made all upshifts below 5000 RPM, I tried to go no faster than 5 MPH over the posted speed limit, and I employed some of the coasting/braking techniques suggested by that other thread. Initially, my patience was tested because it is no fun to see a Geo driver in my rearview mirror getting pissed at me because I was driving too slow. But after a while, it became a fun challenge as I tried different techniques to stay with traffic while keeping an eye on my goal. On that tank, I managed a whopping 28 MPG which is 1 MPG below the EPA highway figure. Although I was proud of the results, I quickly went back to my old style of driving. Even though I saved about $3 dollars in gas (which is a big saving because I fill up twice a week), things are so spread out in California that I would lose a lot of time if I kept to that slow pace. Still, I do try to take it easy at times and I am now averaging about 26 MPG.

 

I kid you not, driving to NC I got 34.9 mpg!!! that was for an extended period too!

 

But once again I've got to ask, is that what your trip computer said..or did you actually calculate it manually?

 

I get crappy gas mileage as well. I think it depends on the driving conditions. If you driving in the city, u r stopping often and accelerating which is why u will get less mileage. I go to school in the New York City, and the highways in New York is like city driving in any other place, so I'm always stoppin to a full stopand acceleratin on the highway. And then I also do some city driving as well. But I never get good gas mileage. I've calculated manually to be about 20.2 miles per gallon. I have an automatic. And the main problem with the tsx is that you have to press the pedal down more to make it accelerate cuz the car only moves quick at higher rpms.

 

22 mpg around town, and a solid 30 on the highway on long trips. At least the tank is bigger

 

I feel yer pain...i do about 95% city driving and my gas mileage is sh!tty. I've been filling up at the same gas station and at the same fuel pump and I've been averaging 18.7mpg. I have the AC on all the time, and I rarely shift under 4k rpm. What can you expect when the engine is so rev-happy (and also the fact that this car weights 3200lbs)?

 

I am averaging 24 mpg in city/highway driving, which is 2 mpg less than I got with my 99 Accord 4 cylinder on the same roads. The TSX has a fabulous engine, compared with my 99 Accord, so no complaints here!

 

I believe we make the same commute (from SGV to downtown LA). I'm averaging 25 mpg for my daily commute. However I don't normally run the A/C (although I often have the sunroof open). That's based on the NAV's calculations. My best so far is 28, where (sad to say) my only open highway trip so far was a business trip to Newport Beach. I only fill with Union 76 premium, but perhaps my driving style is not as rough as others.

 

I heard 1SICKLEX was able to average 35 mpg in his IS300 by drafting behind big rig trucks on his daily commute to community college.

I normally get 22-24. I have gotten as low as 19mpg (stop and go for hours) and as high as 35mpg (all highway driving).

 

LOL, I'm pretty sure it does.

 

I'm in... but only because of the high mileage, I guess.

My estimate is around 145 US gals/month at least for the first year with the TSX.
