Close Encounter with Accident Fraud

I was on my way home tonight when a 04/05 Camry approached me quickly, and tailing me throughout a one minute span. When I sped up, he did, when I changed lanes, he did as well. Shortly after, a Ford Taurus speeds up, cuts me off in front, and slams on his brakes (pretty much forcing me to slam on my brakes, and slam into his "partner" behind me, causing it to be "my fault." Luckily I swerved into the left lane quickly, knowing that no one was ever next to me and the two idiots almost slam into each other.

This is where your "Not an Ashtray" tray becomes useful.

I keep loads of pennies in my Not an Ashtray tray just in case. These two idiots try speeding away, and I catch up to him right before my exit. I roll down my windows, and chuck a handful of pennies at the idiot.

Keep an eye out for these guys, especially in the DC/Metro area.

My gf had a similar experience the other night with an older Nissan Altima. I hate those idiots. And funny stuff about the pennies. I would be worried about them calling the cops on you though if they catch your plate numbers.

Good thing they didn't try that on someone with a gun and a lead foot. Good to see you made it out without a scrath. Hope those pennies did some damage to them!

What an ass! I'm glad you got out of there without a scratch. If I were you, I'd try to catch up to them somehow or call the police and tell them you suspect the people with plate numbers w/e are staging accidents.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I got out without a scratch as well. This month seems to be bad luck for me. First the tire, then this.

my H&K will chuck something special at them if they mess with me...just remember you have the right to bear arms and in the event that your life is truly in danger you have the right to defend yourself.

my dad had a particular experience recently as well. This was in southern california in the orange county area.

Not to be racist or anything, but KCAL9 recently also showed authorities cracking down on these people. Majority of them appears to be latino/mexican and they would operate with a big group...using normal family members and even children to commit the fraud. Example, once they box you in using three cars...and you rear end them, the children were told to "pretend" their neck hurt and this and that by putting their hand on the back of their neck. A guy got conned this way.

Now for my dad, he told me while he was driving down a 2-lane street in his late model Camry, he said he saw a complete total piece of sh*$*@#$ car..like 1980 4door sedan toyota or something..and it was ghetto packed and when he approach them at an intersection (becuz they were coming out of a neighborhood), these guys pulled RIGHT in front of him and slammed their brakes. Also he said across the street he noticed bystanders just standing there, possibly as witness.

He said he swerved so hard to the left to avoid that he's glad no one was on the other lane...he said they just pulled right in front of him and stopped! He said they had already seen my dad coming...so its not like they were blind..they just pulled right in front of him..giving him almost no chance to brake... so he had to bust out some crazy swerving skills...

i hate these people..thats why i'm always careful when I approach these pos cars... ESPECIALLY when they're ghetto packed.

It would have been funny if the a$$hole behind you in the Camry slammed into the Taurus after you swerved out of the way. They would be sitting there thinking how their master plan got foiled.

I hope these guys, and everyone else that tries these stunts die a very slow and painful death. These people are complete idiots.

Good job with the pennies....I have been known to do that also with people who are tailgating me with their high beams on the highway at 70mph. 1 penny out the sunroof works wonders.

Even better than pennies out the sunroof is the ceramic casing of an old sparkplug.

BTW, this wouldn't be your fault. It's always the guy behind's fault for being too close to be able to stop in time.

A <-- B <-- C

If A stops short and B hits A in the rear, B is 100% at fault.

If A stops short and B hits A in the rear, and C hits B in the rear, B is 50% at fault and C is 50% at fault for damages to A, and C is 100% at fault for damages to B.

If A stops short and B hits A in the rear, and C was doing nothing but tailgating (never makes contact), then B is still 100% at fault.

** These are the general insurance rules for this, YMMV by state/province. **

Thanks for the heads up! Crazy stuff but glad it turned out well, especially with the pennies

You're lucky they didn't have more members in their asshole fraud scheme, i've heard stories where you'll be totally boxed in (cant swerve out or you'll hit another one of 'their' cars). Also, they had an episode on law & order about this haha but glad everythings alright..

Probably a good idea to get all the license plates of the crew's cars and report them to the police if you get sucked into this scam.

That's scary stuff. It kind of makes me want to drive around with a video camera running at all times, then if something happens you just run the tape showing the setup. I wonder how much a setup like that would cost?

I just thought of an idea... dangerous but an idea nevertheless.

What if you slam on the breaks, pull up the ebrake, stick your foot out the door... and you don't hit the guy in front of you, but the guy behinds you rearends you. Wouldn't you have foiled their plans? they have no way of blaming it on you and you're the one who's going to get compensated.

...Or you could pull off to the side and let them do their thing, and if they do it to someone else, you can be a witness for the poor guy.

Is this how "no-fault" insurance work in Ontario/Canada?

This scam is called the "Swoop and Squat". Many car insurance companies are aware of this and so are the cops.

There was a State Farm commercial about this.

How would the insurance companies know and prosecute something like this? Like if my wife was ever driving, and she didn't know she was boxed in, and the asshat in front of her slams on their brakes, how would she know she was a "vicitim" of this?

I'm going to tell my wife about this and to be on the lookout for something like this...

I'm no expert on this, but I would suggest getting a police report & letting your insurance co. know what happened in detail. Sometimes it hard to even tell it's B.S.; hence SCAM.
