clear reflector interest (poor boy's JDM)

Hey everyone,

I know i seen this before and it has flopped. A friend of mine is in the plastic industry and may be able to help out with producing a clear replica of our amber turn signals.

I told him $50 per set would probably be the MAX, before interest is lost.

I don't want to waste my time with this, so I would like to know if there would be a general interest in the project. If produced, installing the lense would require opening up your headlight, either by baking the headlight or using a heat gun. If this is a problem, I may be able to do a complete write-up on the process (even though i think there are some out there) or maybe i'll buy a few sets of lights off fleabay and have them ready with clear lenses preinstalled. (would be a good time to do the washer projector mod too!)

So, my aim is to make these between 40-50$, anything more than that would probally be a waste, at least in my opinion.

What you think? A roll call would help with this.

Thanks,

-Mike

only drawback but ask more about it.

He said it be dirt cheap. but the mold cost so much.

Lol, have fun funding it and making it your pet project. This gets brought up over and over again and it always dies for the same reasons.

I realize the cost of the mold, which is neccessary for polycarbonate material (needs to be molded at extreme temperatures). However, We may take an alternative route, which will not be polycarbonate, but another material which should be strong enough to do the job.

Again, if there is a strong enough interest to cover some costs of R&D, then this ball could get rolling. I'm just on hold of the actual quality of this product, but i was assure it would be

First down payment put down for development.

HOPEFULLY a protoype will be made in about a 2 week to 1 month spam (crossed-fingers)

yungwun911, what hondatourer is offering is exactly what you want. He's saying he's willing to get you some salvage yard JDM headlights. In the UK they drive on the left and have the clear side markers, its exactly the JDM lights.

Hey all,

got a small update with some good news and some bad. Good news is that i have a prototype. It came out BEAUTIFUL. Came out exactly as the OEM orange reflector, but CLEAR!!

Bad news now, is that i have to test them for druablity. Make sure they can withstand the heat. of any turnsignal bulb, but the manufacture claims it should be no issue.

Also, pricing is not 100% done yet, but if all goes as planned it should be around the range we need. 50-60$

here it is.

^^ HEAT Shouldn't be a problem if you use LED bulbs for the corners!

They are looking good! Are you concerned about heat from other sources? Cause the bulbs shouldn't be a problem if you use LEDS, which I plan on doing anyway.

What is the clear material on the of the reflector? Is that just packing tape?

Besides durability to heat, you have to test them to make sure they FIT perfectly as well.

*Awaiting some more good news!*

OK, some hi-res pictures are here. Couple things to explain. The mold for this test run was flawed by the OEM orange reflector. Another company messed up the inner portion of it and ripped, chipped, and plastered the inside part. I didn't think it would effect so much, but the mold was so precise in capturing detail that it was all visible in the final product. I'm in the process of getting a new set of reflectors to work on, but in the mean time, figured i would post some pics. The clear reflector looks AMAZING in person. I'm going to test fit it on an open set of headlights i have tomorrow to see fitment, and snap a quick picture.

If this works out, I will be doing the small circle in the headlight as well.

For some reason, a small junk of junk got stuck in the clear reflector. Dunno were it came from, but hopefully that won't happen again. Also, the final mold is not complete, so there is alot of excess material surrounding the lense, which will also be fixed as the molds are finalized.

i'm excited and hope this works out.

goodnight, and enjoy the pics!

Same here. This is the farthest I've seen one of these "proposals" go.

How much are we lookin' at?

Just a question though, would you be able to remove the reflector part? That kinda ruins it for me, but if not I'm still in!

Size the images down to 480 or 640 wide, use those for the IMG tag, and wrap the IMG tag with a URL tag to the larger size. Look at my DIY on the cabin pollen filter, started a quoted reply, and you should see how I did it.

Hi all,

As for updates, i don't have much. I've been swamped with personal work. however, a second mold is underway with the other reflector i had. Turns out they messed up the reflector i showed you, and that's why all those imperfections came out.

I hope to have a 2nd proto for this weekend.

I've gotten some feedback on changing the reflector style alittle. I am really limited though on what i can do, do to pricing. Sure anything is possible but, with all the possibilities, price goes up. =(

I can only speak for myslef but I am sure there is alot of other people who would be excited for this, instead of forking out the big bucks for the JDM Euro's this would be a great alternative. yungwunn911 keep is posted.
