out of curiosity, i usually hand wash my car with cold fresh water during winter. i figure using warm water or hot water would be bad causing the metal to expand, contract. etc... would this be accurate? and how do get rid of the salt stains?

I'll wash my car myself as long as the temp is above freezing. No I won't use carwash places, afraid they will scratch the paint, from their dirty rags when drying the car.

There's a carwash near my home where nothing touches the car except wash fluids and air, so if I'm not doing it by hand I always use that carwash for my beloved toy ...errr Toyota Supra that is. I find it works quite well for a quick cleanup and has no adverse impact on the paint/finish. I've also taken my TSX through it, but I admit I've used regular automatic carwashes for the TSX that use those soft cloth wipers. One near my home does an especially nice job inside and out, but as you probably know these conventional carwashes will take their toll on your finish. My old '89 Legend has been thru this conventional wash hundreds of times and eventually the paint shows micro scratches etc but a once a year or every other year detailing cleans it up again.
