Buying used TSX

Hi,
I need some help deciding on a used TSX. The one I'm looking at is a white 2004 TSX no-nav 6-speed with 24,000 miles on it. It drives pretty good, but has already had 2 owners. The first owner had it for just 3,000 miles which makes kinda suspicious as to whether there's been some trouble or an accident on the car. It is a clean title, though.
- Will a professional visual inspection be able to tell if there's been work done?
- What price should I offer? I'm thinking $21k is good if this was a single owner, but now, maybe abt. $19.5k is right? Any thoughts?
- Anything specific to look for before taking the next step?
Thanks in advance,
Naveen

Well, you're right to be cautious, especially with a 2 owner car of any vintage, but a 2 owner, 2 year old car deserves that second look.
I'm going to assume its being privately sold, instead of dealer sold / certified pre-owned. If it was CPO, you shouldn't have any problems, as the dealer would warranty the car. But if it is being privately sold, you need to do your own legwork.
The easiest step is to get a carfax report for it. (www.carfax.com). Although these are not 100% accurate always (don't catch every accident), it may shed light on and issues or crashes with the car. In addition, they offer the buyback guarantee in case they say a car is free-and-clear and you end up buying a lemon.
The best thing to do would be to ask the seller to let you have an independent body shop inspect and verify the car. Although the seller probably won't want to do this, say you'd pay for the inspection and that you'd buy the car if it really is undamaged and in good shape. Any decent body shops WILL be able to tell if there have been any major metal repairs or replaced parts. The price paid is well worth it for the peace of mind that you're buying a car in good shape.
Lastly, yes, continue to haggle the car to get a rock bottom price. Although 19.5 is probably maybe a little too low, 20-21 is still a good price. If you can get him below 20, more power to you. Good luck!

Reach had good points. I also bought used (CPO) and had my private mechanic do a once-over for extra piece of mind. They will be able to tell if it's had any work. If it's a private sale, you could also ask a dealership if they'll do this, since most of them should know their own cars inside and out.
