I don't mean to sound stupid, but how do you disconnect the battery terminals? Anything I need to be careful of ini order to avoid a shock?

battery runs at 12-14V and is too low to shock human body!! so don't worry it won't fry you.
i usually disconnect negative first, then positive. reconnect is reverse of that. to keep they contact each other or body parts, i always wrapped them in few layer of plastic bags.

gogo: thank's for the reply! I appreciate it.

Well that's good to know that I can't get shocked. What's the concept behind the plastic bags?

With any source of electricty, you must remember that the current (Shock factor) comes out of the positive terminal. Therefore just remember this and you'll never forget the order to disconnect a battery alla gogozy comments.

these plastic bags keep the 2 terminals isolated, just in case soemthng happened, even it's voltage only rated at 12V, it's has much current in it.
