On the turn signal there is this switch on the end... turn it to the on position when you notice it's getting dark

I was taught that if I need to switch my headlights on midway in a trip, it is best to do so while stopped (at redlight, etc.) and tugged up closer behind car in front. That way, you won't distract and/or piss off on-coming traffic so I rather have manual control over when my headlights go on. I leave mine on all the time by the way.

Turn the brightness level all the way up and you can have your lights on and a bright navi screen

Or take the screen off auto mode

or buy a car made by GM

speaking of a GM car, my mom's crappy Trans Sport minivan has a better light system than ours. Put it on auto and it turns on and off by itself. If our Navi could be on the same sensor so that it goes in dark mode when the light turns on and vice versa, it would be nice. I hate having to turn the navi screen on and off daytime mode manually so I don't turn on the lights during day time. but i understand "they" recommend you leave your lights on all the time. reduces day time traffic accidents as well.

What do you mean? The auto-off feature (I'm assuming you mean when you leave your car the lights go off) works the other way around as well. When I come back in my car after leaving them on they come back on. Wouldn't that be the opposite of auto-off?

Auto-on means the lights go from off to on automatically when the headlight sensors sense it getting dark out

That's what I would assume he meant... but what does that have to do with the auto-off feature?

You could do like I did and train a small monkey to sit on your armrest and turn the headlights on and off for you. This gives you the added benefit of auto dimming, auto up/down on all your windows, auto door lock/unlock and auto moonroof operation.

Not really anything to do with that directly. But he's simply saying that if you leave the lights at ON position at all time (which is what I do), then you won't have to worry about turning them ON and OFF manually each time you drive during day or night; and the battery won't drain because the light will automatically be shut once the car is parked and locked/armed.

yeah, that's what I do too. and then just use the brightness control to quickly change the navi screen when I need it.

Now Navi screen is something I don't worry about... coz I didn't get Navi
not that it would have been useful for me, but the more toy the better as always
