after some miles on a MT

I'm not sure is it because I'm a new MT driver and I'm grinding the hell out of my gears. But my MT, when I shift into the gears (esp 1, 2, 3), it definitely does not feel as soft as when I first picked it up. I'm at 230 miles. Would this be because I'm ruining the gears or that's how MT are after they are about to be brokin in, I hope it's the latter reason.

Many owners of MT (including myself) have mentioned the notchiness of the 1-2 shift. I hope this is normal; my dealer did not seem too comcerned about it.

I've got the same...problem..if we can call it that. I am getting notchy or rough shifts going to second and 3rd mostly. Sometimes it even feels like it might grind but it doesnt. Other time it goes in perfectly. I am a new MT driver as well so maybe with the right touch it will be better....not sure. If my radio is off I can even hear the roughness when shifting. I talked to my dealer and he stated that as the car gets worked in it will get better, but will never completely go away. Apparently the RSX has this same problem. On the RSX boards they talk about the notchiness going away as the car warms up.

My CG is approaching 1500 miles and I never had this problem.
I shift rather quick and usually a flick of the wrist does the job.

just a suggestion:
when shifting from 1->2, try shifting into the 6 o'clock direction (not 7). this should, hopefully, help with the grind u are noticing.

as for 2->3, I think a lot of ppl, including myself, are experiencing the 'roughness'... will ask about this the next time I visit my dealer.

I've noticed a certain "notchiness" in the 1->2 shift but not so much in the 2->3 shift...after that (3->4+) it's "smooth like buttah".

I love the MT...I'll never go AT again!

what i do is sometimes i will go 1>2 then bring it down to reverse (while stopped ofcourse) this is a way to unlock the gears so to speak it runs smooth after that.

My car seems smoother now at 1250 miles than it did when I first got it. I think I'm getting better at shifting and I know I'm getting better at rev matching on upshifts. Very smooth ride.

My car has around 2K miles on it and it seems to be okay. 1->2 has the notchiness, but 2->3 and anything after is fine. I suggest when you shift from 2->3, don't grab on to the shifter, just use your palm to push from below. Let the springs do it's work and it will fell right into it. For 4->5 shifts, push diagonally.

why?

if anything it's practise that is needed and over time this will not be an issue.

Well, I dont think so. Read the rsx boards and you will see that this problem doesnt go away with practice.

This is a cable shifter, correct?

In the VW cable shifter, there is a very simple alignment procedure that ensures the shifter position corresponds with the correct cable tension/position at the transmission and folks are always recommending that the alignment be done in situations like this.

Don't know if this is a big deal in the TSX or not, but it's worth looking into.

I've felt this from 1-2 and 2-3 as well. It seemed much smoother at first.

One thing though.. is it important to rev-match in neutral before you flick your wrist, or just as you let off the clutch?

Unless the RSX transmission is the same which it isn't they are 2 different issues. I still don't see the connection to red line though.

This is a great tip. I tried it yesterday, and NO notchiness from 1 -> 2. I guess I've been in the bad habit of holding the shifter to the left excessively. Try it, guys.

2 -> 3 is a different story....

The RSX has the exact same problem, and apparently it gets better as the car warms up. I have heard that redline helps. It usually helps with rough or grainy shifting..even though its usually just masking the problem.
