'99 Mustang V6 Owner Needs TSX Buying Advice
Hi all,
It is time to upgrade the '99 Mustang V6 MT I have been driving for about 6 years. It is the only car I have ever owned. I know the Mustang V6 and the TSX are in separate classes but I didn’t get a good feel for how the TSX performs during the test drive.
I realize this may be a no-brain question but I am going to ask it anyway. Is there a noticeable power (acceleration) difference between the V6 Mustang and the TSX?
Is anyone familiar enough with both cars to offer any advice?
PS - I am not looking for a fast car, the Mustang isn't really fast, but I would like to set my expectations for the car before deciding to purchase the TSX.
Thanks,
Michael

When I drove my TSX, I passed by Mustangs on the frwy all the time...
Come to think of it, I can't recall ever being passed by a Mustang that didn't have a V8.
The TSX is really nice, but if you want more oomph, you might have to trade some luxury for hp (depending on your budget).

The TSX is just as fast (or at least pretty damn close) in a straight line as a '99 V6 Mustang, but the TSX handles much better. My father had a '98 V6 Mustang a few years ago. I hated how that thing handled. For a sports car, it had pretty soft suspension and there was a lot of body roll when cornering.
That car I also found severely lacking in the top end. The initial acceleration was pretty good, but at highway speeds, I felt like I had to step down pretty hard on the accelerator to pass.

Thanks for all of the great comments.
I agree that straight-line acceleration isn't the only way to measure performance; however, I do a lot of straight-line accelerating during my commute. In addition, I feel great about the TSX handling.
I read quite a few of the AT vs. MT posts and a lot of griping about acceleration. I now have the impression that TSX owners want more torque but that the car does not accelerate like a dodge shadow.

You have to get used to getting it into the higher revs. Then, you'll find it pretty comparable, if not faster, I would think. Particularly with the MT. It's the launch from dead zero that a lower-torque FWD car really suffers, so it's not an ideal drag racer, but the TSX will probably be faster than you expected.

rwd and torque. You wont find many places to go with four doors except bmw.
If a mustang fits your lifestyle, comp with civic si, not tsx.
If you want mustang with four doors go to subaru wrx. If you want cheap go mazda 3.
If you like mustang, you might like mazda 6.
If you want at over mt acura tl is the car.
What you want is honda accord four door v6.
Drive everything and go for what feels best.

american cars are pieces of shit..especially ford. that company is going down the tubes anyway. get a tsx, it has the same acceleration and it won't fall apart, guzzle gas or tell everyone you're white trash like a mustang will.

Let's be politically correct and equal to all races. I think what you meant to say was, "white/brown/yellow/red/orange/pink trash like a mustang will"

If it worked for me, would go si.
Read there will be 2007 tls with the rl engine and 6mt with lsd. Said the torque steer isnt bad and the upgrade costs like $4,000. Sounds like a winner

If you want power, the STi is a great choice. I'm a pre subydude, so I love subies =] The new STi Limited just came out, kinda like a rich man's STi if you know what I mean, no absurd huge rear wing, and leather + heated seats with the same power. Great choice, wish I had the choice to buy that, except I'm still 18, and insurance ain't a joke =]

anyways, if you're asking about power now, i suggest testing driving a TL.

Don't forget to test drive the new G35 - it's the closest you can get to having a BMW without paying for it (in other words, the G35 is better than the 3 series in many ways but still not in handling/ride quality) - check out some reviews, like on Car and Driver.
Personally, not my style, which is why I have a TSX. But it might feel more familiar to you because of the brawny engine and RWD.

I find if you are really into “acceleration” type cars the TSX is not for you. It’s really bizarre, you can drive other cars that have an identical 0-60 time as the TSX and still feel like you are getting there in ½ the time.
No question the TSX shines in the higher rpm’s. I have found in certain speed ranges being able to accelerate from 4000-6000 is fun, mainly because so few cars are really effective in that RPM band….it’s really nice on the hwy and when doing faster commuting.
With the TSX you always feel like you are driving the knife to the gun fight.

For anyone who has driven in Las Vegas you know you will get trampled on if you don't drive a certain way. Especially in the underdeveloped areas that lack modern traffic controls such as effective stop lights and stop signs. For example, turning left from a stop sign into traffic moving 55 mph (that isn’t the posted speed limit – but no one cares?). There are a few risky situations like that on my commute but I don’t want to digress off topic.
My girlfriend’s '06 Passat 2.0T does a pretty good job at that stop sign even with the turbo lag. I gather from the replies that the TSX is capable of that maneuver but I won't "feel" it accelerating.
Thanks!

Quick Update
I am now the proud owner of a Mustang V6 MT and a '06 TSX White Pearl/Black AT Navi. I have driven the TSX for about 300 miles and I am perfectly happy with it.
When I bought the TSX I took both the AT and MT out for another spin. The AT was easily as fast as my Mustang V6 MT and just as fun to drive.
I definitely recommend the TSX MT if you don't have to drive in bumper to bumper traffic. The car shifts so smooth and has great acceleration for a 4 cylinder. I don't think any Mustang V6 owners would be dissatisfied with the acceleration of the TSX MT unless they compare the TSX to the V8 Mustang. The TSX gets my vote based on the shorter shifting and easier clutch.
I went with the AT because I am sick of driving a MT in stop and go traffic. So far I am not disappointed.
The dealer debagged the TSX for me. Now I just need:
tint
Nissan 350 cargo net
ECU reflash
A drop (i'm happy w/ stock rims)
I think those mods will satisify me for a year.
Cheers and thanks to everyone who replied to this thread!

I know, that was cheesy. Congrats on your new ride. I am sincerely jealous that your 06 has a nicer steering wheel than my 05 (I just got an 06 loaner for a day with the grippier wheel.)
