6MT Drivers... do you...

Do you go from like 4th straight to 6th?

Or you know accelerate through 1-3 and then dump to 6th just to cruise?

Is this bad for the transmission?

I normally do that... and now acura is telling me that the grinding sound that can be heard anytime you go into 5th gear is due to a synchronizer problem with that gear... caused by going straight to 5th or 6th from like 3rd.

As a result its not covered under warranty and Acura is yet again about to fuck me over with the stick in this fucking car.

And yes I have heard that skipping gears is not a good idea, althought I'm not sure how it would mess up the 5th gear syncro.

i was reading another car forum, they said, the new vett forced u to shift from
1st to 4th... to save gas... only way to overide it is to floor it pass a x rpm...

You're killing the synchros. Stop shifting that way. You might as well shift without the clutch.

The synchros match the transmission speed to the engine speed. The difference between 3rd and 5th is huge, there is no way they can change speeds that fast.
3rd to 6th is even worse. You're probably revving pretty high in the lower gear when you shift. 3rd at 7000 RPMs is not even remotely close to the speed the car would go at 7000 RPM in 5th gear.

Acura is not screwing you, you are screwing Acura by monkeying up your transmisison and trying to make them pay for it.

My friend shifts his RSX that way (4th to 6th) and the synchros did get messed up in his car. He had it repaired under warranty however. I always use every gear because I like shifting!

well if you want to skip gears you should let the rpm drop so it kinda matches what it would be like in 5th. so if your at 7000 in third hold the clutch down and let it drop to 3000 before you shift

Exactly.

If you are smoothly matching revs like you should be anyway there is no problem with shifting into whatever gear you want. When you finally release the clutch there should be no noticeable gain or drop on the tach if you've matched revs correctly. The stick should require no more than light 2-finger pressure to engage.

So if you've been doing that, tell that dealer to STFU and fix the F#%KING tranny.

Most Stealerships are full of stupid people or scumbags. Sometimes both. It can be hard to tell the difference....

Say you want to go from 3rd to 6th without accelerating with the other gears (4th and 5th), could you just run through those gears with the shifter without engaging that gear with the clutch in order for the syncros to change the speed of the transmittion gears before you put any pressure on them from the engine?

Hey Guys, isn't it more the gear you switch to is based on your speed? I go from 1st to 2nd to third to neutral to 3rd or 2nd a lot of times based on my speed when I have to reengage.

The best thing would be to clutch-in.... Keep very light pressure on the stick towards 6th, wait for the engine RPM's to drop where you'd be matching 6th gear, and pop it in. If you get good at matching the revs there should be no movement on the tach once you let the clutch out.

There is very little clutch wear and virtually no stress on the tranny if you shift this way.....

They told me that it was a bad synchro in 5th gear, apparently not my fault. Covered it under warranty no questions asked at the dealership here in Tampa.

WTF? I've never heard of this...
Rev-matching really only applys to down-shifting.
WHENEVER you up-shift, the RPM's will drop... no matter what gear you're going in. Beit 3-4, 3-5 or 3-6, there's not more wear induced the higher the gear. In fact, the stress that's induced on any given part will be less due to less friction/rpm.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I highly doubt it.

Sounds like that dealership is trying to rape you. If they wanted, they could even due a "good will" repair. A friend of mine at Southbay Acura has done this before...

I'd try another dealership.
Good luck...

i dont skip geats upshifting, the rpm drop is huge, the only way you could do it is to rev pretty high then shift.

i do rev match when i downshift tho. especially going from any gear back to 2nd.

hondata makes rev matching oh so easy.

I agree. I'd skipped gears for years on my CRX and never had any synchro problems.

I'm sure all of us have jumped on the gas and achieved our cruising speed in 2nd or 3rd gear. In that instance, it's useless to row through the rest of the gears because you're going to stay at the same speed, so you just go straight to 5th or 6th to cruise.

As for downshifting, I had to talk my ex out of downshifting through the gears when coming to a stop. And she wondered why she was burning through clutches on her turbo eclipse!

That reminds me of a dude who had a Type R and was asking if anyone ever shifted passed 2000RPM... I think I laughed for 2 days straight... The dude was very serious... At 2000 RPM there is no torque at all on a Type R... Funny people...

I think he meant why buy it if you are going to shift below 2k because as you say... all its power is above 4k.

I was wondering this, so I came on the forum to search tonight! I jumped on the highway and nailed the gas.... I hit 80 MPH in 3rd gear and then punched it right to 6th to cruise.... I thought it was ok, but wasn't sure.. most posts I'm reading say it's bad.... but a couple say it doesn't make a rat's ass of a difference... so what's the deal? is it ok to skip gears when you rev really high after pounding on the gas and just want to cruise (i.e. up to 80 in 3rd and then straight to 6th)

If you are going to skip gears, you HAVE to rev match and let the RPMs drop to what it would be in 6th at that speed.

yup...

i can't find any reason for me to skip gears. if i really hated shifting, i would've just bought an auto, or, if i had to insist on a MT, i would've looked for a 5MT.

ya, i would agree...

step down on the clutch until you see the revs drop to, maybe, 2000-2500 rpm's before easing off of the clutch?

i'm guessing, b/c i've never skipped gears...

I skip gears every now and then. It's usually while going pretty slow though and not revving it out. Somewhere under 3k rpm.

Some of the B-Series transmissions had problems with sychros, and I think that as long as you let the rpms drop far enough it shouldn't be a problem for the synchros. Sounds to me like Acura is just trying to screw you out of doing work, which they have done with me.
