5AT - Should I be in neutral when I go downhill?

Hey guys. Simple question, when I am on a downward incline, is it better for my car to be in neutral rather than drive?

Nope. Just let the computer do its thing. It's not like you actually save that much gas.

Well, if you put it in neutral and turn off the engine.......

I don't know if its harmful for the transmission in a 5AT, but I know in my 6MT i improve my mileage by coasting down a lot of the bigger hills around here.

Not sure where you live, but in Cali, the law actually explicitly states that it is illegal to "coast" down a hill in neutral. Your car must be engaged in a gear during regular driving. Plus, unless these are enormous hills, the benefit is minimal, since the engine still has to expend gas to idle.

Ahhh,,, but, if you use your engine to help brake, then you save your brakes...

Stole my post : )

The only other Cali-specific vehicle rule I remember are the two things that are legal to have fall out of your vehicle and hit the roadway.

Dont have to turn off the engine. When you take your foot off the gas and coast, the fuel injectors turn off. Acura tech told me that one.

You're right, they do...until the rpms reach idle speed and then the injectors have to pulse regularly to maintain the idle speed.

But if you coast IN gear then that shouldnt happen. So, the whole point to this is that you dont have to drop to neutral when coasting.

Exactly

Therefore it doesn't make sense to be in neutral. I think we've demonstrated the point sufficiently for the original poster.

Agreed. So then it has be deemed so that in this thread, on this day of Dec 9th, 2004 that NEUTRAL shant be needed when one wishes to coast thier TSX.

So it is written, so let it be done...

THREE shall be the number! And the number shall be THREE! FIVE IS RIGHT OUT!

Exactly, (to everyones post) It is illigal in NY i know for a fact to shift into nutral down hill or at a stop light, (really MT friendly, even in my 5AT i break this one all the time), Further more its not really safe to be in nutral while moving, if something happens fast, and you need to move quick, you cant, its better to allways be in gear, lol, something that memphis's dad allways yelled at him, when i learned how to drive a stick

Is your name really Memphis? People who have names after cities are cool.

But I knew a guy at work who was named Manhatten , not too cool...

Back in the dark ages, I actually had a little mt Saab 93 that had a clutch override, and when you took your foot off the accelerator, the engine would disengage and you would coast - down hill, to the intersection, or whatever. Of course, what I saved on gas I spent on brake lining.....................................

are we sure dexterism is clear now??????? I hink we should cover this again, or perhaps this can be the Friday afternoon postwhore thread....................

true, but when Im slowing down at a stop sign or whatver, i put my car in neutral for that very reason - brakes are a lot cheaper than a new clutch.

Im not in Cali, but I have heard taht law before. Its interesting bc there really isnt a way for them to enforce it.

What? You've never heard of the disengaged clutch cops?

The way Honda/Acura automatic transmissions have been blowing up, I'd rather risk replacing brake pads and rotors than transmissions.
