For those who use the SS option on your 5ATs, do you mostly start off in 1st or 2nd?

2nd gives a smoother start on a flat road, but does it also save gas? I would do it more if I knew I wasn't hurting the engine and saving fuel, too.

I was in a Toyota Avalon rental the other day, and its default start gear was 4th in a 6sp AUTO.

A 2nd gear start is used for slippery conditions like being on snow or ice. It will use more gas. No automatic trans equipped car starts in 4th gear....The gearing is way to high and it would be lugging and barely able to run.

i use it when i'm in traffic so the engine doesn't have to constantly go 1-2-3-1-2-1 etc..

just leave it in second and creep along :/

also, this only works if you shift to second while stopped or barely moving. if going at any real speed the engine will automatically downshift from 2-1.
