Exclamation 1st oil change

I realize this might be a repost, and I did search this site on this topic...

So my car is about 4900+ miles, so i'm thinking it's about time to change the oil, right? I call the dealership and they said i was waay to early. I should call back when it's close to 10,000 miles. Even my first oil change. The advisor said there is a special "break-in" oil. I looked in the manual and sure enough, every 10K change the oil.

Is this recommended? I've never heard of an oil lasting 10,000 miles. Any suggestions?

I don't know..... i changed my first oil when it reached 4000km.... some people say it's good to have the break-in oil in your engine longer, but then again, some say because that oil contains metal chips and other debris from your engine, should change it~

If you don't feel comfortable waiting 10,000mi then change it at 5,000mi. Just tell the dealership your driving style puts you under the "severe" schedule.

I'll answer your question in a sec, but take a look at this:

Setup: 04 Silverado 5.3L V-8, Oil has 12,650 miles. No make-up oil or filter changes, no oil or fuel adds. Truck has 18,000 miles, oil was previously changed at 4000 before this fill went in at the 6000 mark. GM Oil Life System indicated for a change at 12,500, the maximum allowable interval. Oil was in use for 13 months, with lots of Redline in the Cold Ohio Winter during the short 8 mile commute.

Havoline 5w-30 GF-4, Valvoline (Champion Labs) Oil Filter.

Do the first change between 3-5000 miles. Sooner is fine, but theres really no need to from what I've found.

I'd change every 3-5000 miles thereafter unless oil analysis shows that the oil is suitable for a longer service interval.

The Special Migical God Oil has extra moly added to aid break-in. I have owned Honda/Acura cars for the last 15 years and have always heard to WAIT until 5000 miles for the first oil change in order to allow the moly to do its thing. I would NOT go 10000 miles like the dealer says. Call another dealer and see what they say.

Its not what the dealer says. Its what the TSX Onwers manual says. Dont you guys read your owners manual. Even I havent read it and I know it says 10,000km for first change.

OR DOES IT?

Its not that important to go to an Acura dealer. Changing oil isn't that hard. Any competent mechanic ought to be able to do it right. I go to my local Acura dealer because (a) they only charge $29 to do it, (b) it saves me time, and (c) they have a record of me doing it in case warranty issues ever came up (although receipts from any qualified place should be just as good). Buying honda parts and oil costs more doing it yourself then the dealer. Go figure.

01 GSR and 04 TSX bought from same dealer-was told with each car first "free" oil change by 1500 miles. I am suprised no one else had a dealer recommend this. BTW owners man. maint. guide etc..EPA has something to say about intervals. all cars not just Acura
