Cool 19 yr old completes non-navi to navi conversion (2006)

so far, i think im the youngest person to complete this conversion. the etm and service manual are definite must haves in order to begin.. i dont have too many photos of the disassembling and diy info.. [i will try to shoot some when i go back to hook up the HFL and voice activation buttons] i received my 2006 navi from a car that was totalled. i got the navi display along with all the harnesses, navi unit, the temperature sensor and trim, steering wheel buttons, and the whole front harness assembly for $1550 shipped. and wires ran about 30$ at frys
install total: 1580
here are the pictures

^my non-navi tsx.. [during a tx canonball run lol]

^a package arrived in the mail... =)

^gotta spread it out to get an idea

...
i do have pix of the steering wheel button install.
[i was anxious then so i took pix, as the install progressed i was too focussed on working instead of taking pictures..] [[but i will snap some shots of the wiring when i get to the hfl]

^using the poker tool to pop off the cover of the regular hfl buttons

^cover off

^just gottta take out these 2 screws

^voice activation buttons present.. they light up now. but some wiring will have to be added to the harness for them to work. [its a gray wire in plug 20 i think?]

^dvd unit installed.. i will be cleaning up the wires soon. i still have all the wire wraps from the front harness the guy gave me.

^installed with a new start up screen.. i still gotta figure out how to remove the nag on an 06

^ it actually shows my position now... for a day i was driving and wondering why my car was off a street.. [ i thought it was because i didn't have the gps bolted down.] thanks to the service manual i was able to deduce that my vss wire wasnt working since my yaw rate and everything else worked fine... (see you need the service manual in these times)..

^hey tuoncan
does the 05 have this?

^you can change the default map colors... on an 06 tho. you can just go through normal settings and change the day color (beige, black, brown, few other colors) and then you can also change the night color .... [hooking up the ill+ wires will designate what color change shows up]

^only thing left is HFL and voice activation.

if i can do it? you can do it! my b/g only consisted of installing radios and amps; and working with computers... + im 19 and a sophomore in college. you can do it!

hardwork pays off..

Good job on the conversion project! If I have to do it again, I will gladly pay the $2000 to have it as standard equipment.

Glad you got it done man

So you ended up finding the wiring that you asked me about on IM? You found it at Fry's? Was it the shielded stuff that you ended up needing?

Wow, that's awesome...I've been looking to find a navi unit for my car but seem to only be able to find the JDM version. How long did it take you to install everything?

Very impressive!! I am thinking of getting a Navi unit as well. Now I am just thinking if I should get a stock Navi unit, or get an aftermarket lip up DVD/Navi unit.

install took quite a few days..
on day 1) i was tearing apart the whole car... everything was out since i was trying to use the full navi harness... when it came down to just the bare dashboard. i couldn't pop that sucker off.. lol. and didnt really want to remove any airbags.. =X so i decided to revert. [5 hrs down the drain] i kept having to go to work and study for summer classes.. but if u had just a whole week. im sure it'd take anyone 4 days max. [[[being impatient sucks. as i am... i kept wanting to get it done in ONE day.. lol. IMPOSSIBLE. it takes time.. and you HAVE to study the manuals.. they tell you everything.. i know how to read em like pizza and pepperoni.. (my fav.)]]]

about 4 days.. [not consecutive]

you should search car-parts.com

you'll most likely find junkyards in ny.
definitely attempt to find an 06 unit tho. zaggat survey is pretty cool

i actually ended up getting a 25ft. 9 conductor wire.. that was 24 gauge.. close enough to 22 =). i just wanted to be sure i got the right kind of shielded wire. and im very much so glad i did now.. radioshack had some.. but frys had everything cheaper!

Looks like you did a superb job. I know it was really frustrating you, and I can't blame you, it would have taken quite a while to do this one too. I'm very glad you went and got the manuals, they're indispensable. You're now in the elite of TSX electrical modders.

wow I'm impress. I know you would pull this off with all those wire harnesses available. I spent more money on it and didn't get the complete system as you. How did you go about installing the microphone? If it's easy I might consider upgrading my system. At that point, haha I might ask you for some tips.

Congrats to you. I love my navi conversion. I bet you will love it too. Enjoy!

that is simply stunning. i need to find the parts needed for this so i can try it out. it's summer right now and i can ride the 2 wheels instead of the 4. would be better incentive to keep the car beyond 2008 when the '09 comes out.

1) you blew off my question.. lol
2) 06 has HFL =P soo my microphone was preinstalled.... ? =) but doesnt seem to hard to add one. i think u might be able to just get tehw hole piece from an 06.. then plug it in... and run that wire down the a-pillar just like those guys did their valentine v1 hardwires.. [my escort hardwire was way easier tho imo]

I'm confused, I have a 2006 TSX as well but do not recall anything about voice activation. Was this only on the Nav option?

Very nice job.

Can I do a 2006 Navi conversion to my 2004? 2004 didn't have voice-activation, right?
