17mpg!?!? with 90% city driving, is this even normal?
so i do about 90% city driving, with alot of stop and go traffic and very short commute.
i got about 250 miles out of a full tank right before the light coming on. and i averaged about 17.5 mpg (i calculated it myself)...
is this even normal? anyone else get this low mpg with city driving?

all stop & go/city driving i get close to 20-24... all highway ~70-75mph avg, i get 34-36
17.5mpg...... if u have a heavy foot, i'd say thats about right. although when i get spirited in city driving, mr overestimed trip computer tells me im getting about 20mpg, but probably more like 18mpg.

that's exactly what i get right now. i get about 400 KM(250 miles) to a tank. i pretty much drive 100% city. i came to the realization that the tsx isn't exactly the best in the city but what can we do....would an octane booster help? im starting to get a little frustrated with putting $75 to fill up my tank...

I do a mix of highway, stop-n-go, and city driving and pull about 320 miles before the orange light goes on. 17mpg of mainly city sounds perfectly plausible if you have a heavy foot.
Are you 5AT or 6MT? If you're 6MT try shifting early (2k or so) and going easy on the gas and see if things improve.

we are between 18-21, do u do jack rabbit starts and have a heavy foot? u should be able to improve some by driving a little more conservatively,

I get 20-21 MPG over all with mostly city. I like to punch it a lot in 1st and 2nd gears then ease off the pedal in 3rd. I noticed the instantaneous fuel consumption bar goes back up under 2500 RMP.
So yes, it is normal to get that gas mileage. If you make a conscious attempt to improve your gas mileage, you will notice a difference. Here is what I did: I reset my average and implemented an intervention to improve it. Then after a few months, I noticed an improvement. I was getting about 15MPG, then improved it to around 20MPG.

damnn... i get about 24-26mpg in the city depending on how aggressive i drive.. but if you're getting 17mpg.. how's your oil? and what grade do you pump? all of that matters. it's weird though.. when i pump 89 plus..i get better gas mileage then 93 supreme.. best in the highway i got yet was 36.5mpg!!

The TSX is awful for city mpg, and one of my biggest gripes with the car. It's a high performance 4 cyl moving a decent amount of car, though, so I guess one shouldn't really complain. Here's our stats from another thread:
Year of your car - 2007
- Cost of fill up + price of gasoline in your area - Depends on how low we take the tank of course, but around $56.00+ is a safe bet (we use Premium only).
- MPG - This is where it gets very tricky, and we have experienced dismal city readings since day one unfortunately. Our worst tank was 16+mpg while the engine was still breaking in and we are lucky to get 20+ most of the time. I don't think anything is wrong with the car per se, just a combination of factors working against us (e.g. very short trips to the office, all stop and go, crappy gas in our area, etc.). On our all highway trips to go back home and see family, we can easily pull 33+, though.
- % of highway driving - regularly, 5% on an entire tank at best.
-Mileage: 11,000

i average 27-28mpg with 50/50 city/highway. 6 speed manual,shift at 3500rpm, and average 80mph on highway... hearing some of u guys getting 17ish is pretty bad :/.
btw i use royal purple 5w30, every since i change with that i average 2miles per gallon more then with honda 5w30. with a full take i average 370 with 13.3 gallon fill up.

i dunno for whoever is getting bad gas mileage for the tsx.. right now i'm at 31mpg city/highway. i just pumped a full tank with unleaded plus.. whoever getting 17-20mpg.. do you guys have any performance aftermarket parts? i'm riding bone stock. it's probably the way you drive and like i say.. oil changes and the right air in your tires does matter. tsx is by far the best mpg car i've ever drove..

opps i meant 270 miles divide about 13 gallons.
All the local stop and goes really kill gas. One week i kept it really light and didn't speed over 55. I hit well close to 28 mixed highway and local.
Some of my friends think it necessary to slam on the breaks at the very last moment where they need to stop.
I usually coast earlier if i see a red light then slow down.

1) Make sure car is tuned up (tires at right pressure, no alignment problems, correct type of oil).
2) Practice using as little gas as you need to accellerate. The MID display can help. If you don't have one, keep backing off the accellerator until you're speeding up at the minimum rate without being a traffic hazard.
3) Hold constant speed when you can. Speeding up and slowing down eats up gas. You're much better off speeding up to 20, cruise at that, then stop, then going to 30 and making a harder stop.
3) Look ahead, and anticipate the next stop. Start coasting early and take a longer time to stop. You'd be surprised how most people keep their foot on the gas right up to a stoplight.
A lot of these are habits you don't know you have - most people don't. But just increase your awareness of what your right foot is doing, and you should see an improvement.

Yah I was wondering about my mileage... just picked up a '04 with 100,000K 5AT in March of this year (I am in Canada). Sure seems like she sucks a lotta gas...I drive 95% city and mostly lead footed....DAM way too fun to go fast.... VROOM!! VROOM!!! (almost bought a Mazda 6....). So I finally kept track got 400K on a fill until the light came on.
About 52L for 400K (App. 13L left when light comes on).
7.7L/100km or 21.7mpg - City driving with heavy foot!! not bad I guess??
I have some road trips coming up....we will see highway miles

It doesn't sound unusual at all. I personally think the TSX is a gas guzzler. If you implement some strategies to save gas, you should get it up to 20-22 city.

This car is ridiculously bad within the city, especially considering the power(or the lack their of).
The Accord V6 makes much more power than our car, yet it runs on 87, and gets similar mileage. The BMW 328i also has similar mpg figures(21/30), yet it has a nice I6 along with ~30 more hp and ~30 ft-lbs tq. more. Step it up Acura

i really dont know what to say fellas.. i think the tsx is my favorite car for gas mileage.. the k24 has plenty of torque. i had an 01 lexus is300.. that car gas mileage sucks.. and the 2jz-gt isn't as fast i don't think. about 17-18mpg highway/city. now i'm getting 26-31mpg highway/city. both car is an auto btw. is anyone rolling with the 6 speed that is getting bad gas mileage?

I get anywhere from 25mpg to 30mpg (7.5-8.5L/100km) with very little highway. Where I live, it's all traffic lights, with the one highway in the city being on the wrong side of town. If you've got a MT, be sure not to put the clutch in when coasting. I try to engine brake as much as I can since this shuts off the fuel injectors. This works really well when going down a hill.

i tried an experiment...
this time, i accelerated slowly and no WOT and never went past 3k rpm. i did about 95% city driving, short commute.
yet i did the calculations again and it came out to be 17mpg again!!!
is something wrong? should i talk to the dealer about this? i got about 178 miles with 10.2 something gallons
this is horrible! at least gas price is dropping...

i have an '06 with about 40k miles and my all time best mixed highway and local (not city) is 42.8mpg
i NEVER use the cruise control
roll up to stop lights
no launches from a stop light
0-30wt Mobile 1
tire pressure @ 40psi
k&n cold air intake which is fed cold air from a cutout in the front fascia
...which leads to me to a rant about the factory air intake, it has two 90* bends and i don't think that you could purpose-build a more restrictive intake system
...i'm getting to the point where i may replace the exhaust system for a little less restriction
love the car

mmmmmm....
dude, our cars gets rape driving on city. No matter what you try to do, we will always get 17-22 mpg at the most.
I drive 70% highway 30% city, and I get around 32mpg, but if I driving more city then my mpg drops significantly.

wow, that is really low; im assuming it was b/c of traffic?
i also read your previous response. so is it normal for me to get this low of mpg even if i dont drive aggressively? 95% city is killing my mpg?
should i even call acura service about this?

i got 40.2 this morning and it's time to clean the k&n i think...for the winter, i go all the way up to a 5wt Mobile 1 LOL!
i forgot to note that i drained what i could from the trans and put in Mobile 1 ATF...i tend to change the ATF every 20k or so on all my vehicles just to make sure it doesn't look too ugly
my next project is figuring out a way to make a cutout in the wheel well cover to gain easy and reliable access to the filter without making it look ugly

about the tire pressure....i've thought about it for a while before maintaing 40psi and used my previous car (Infiniti G35 Coupe) as a reference point
those tires (forget the brand) were z-rated puppies that required 42psi so i rationalized going to 40 in my mind by doing some searches over time and i couldn't find anyone who said that pressure was too high (i spent a lot of time on tree-huggers forums boasting of hypermileage tricks)...some were running 50psi on regular street tires and that's over the top for me...ride quality has not suffered appreciably for me (i could never use the in-car blue tooth phone anyway, because of road noise) and i've been happy with the results, especially with tire wear, which has been even and i have LOTS of tread left...
i tend to pressurize my tires on a different basis than most...although i initially adjust by tire pressure, i do the final adjustments by taking three temperature measurement across the width of the tire and adjust up or down, so with 40psi my IR gun registers no more than 2* difference across the three points..i check the tire pressure every sunday evening (this manic behavior let me get almost 80K miles out of a set of Yokohoma's a number of years ago but they WERE a BIT thin..now that i think of it, my old IS300 came with Goodyears and i did the same deal and only got 25K because the sidewalls kept blowing out)
as they say, you results may vary but that's what i do
