1-2 Shift Weird

Hey Guys,

I only noticed this now, but it seems that for my TSX the 1-2 shift is a bit weird, and it feels notchy at times, have any of you experienced this before, is this something to worry about. I've driven stick all my life, it does not feel bad, but it definately feels a tad different then the rest of the gears. What you guys think?

are you getting a crunch? grind?

the gear ratios for 1 and 2 isn't the best. is this what you're talking about?

the car only has 800 miles on it, it does not feel like a grind, but it's not as smooth as the other gears, is this something i should worry about?

i've owned 3 other manual cars before the tsx... while the tsx tranny is silky smooth, the 1-2 shift is definitely "different" compared to other cars; the moment you drop the clutch and shift from 1st to 2nd, the rpm drops very low and it takes a while for the car to pick up on the rpm again.. im no expert but i think this is a combination of the DBW and the low torque nature of the tsx

the gearing ratio and the dbw nature could not be changed much, but i believe that the hondata reflash would smoothen up the torque curve a bit and help with this problem perhaps?

Hondata will not fix this...it still happens for me. Just release the clutch slowly into 2nd and you should be okay. Also, if shifting too quickly from 1st to 2nd, you may grind. I agree with a post above about the synchro not being that great. Regardless, the TSX has one of the best manuals on the planet

It's because of the large gap in ratios between 1st and 2nd. The input shaft speed has to be slowed down by the 2nd gear synchros and that's why it feels weird. To avoid it, spend a little more time in neutral before pulling into 2nd.

ya, dbw may be an explaination.

gear ratios can be modified, a la rsx 2-5 gears:

DBW only causes a difficulty in getting out of 1st. But not getting into second.

My 1-2 is notchy. Cant do it as fast as I would like. Might have a problem becuase everybody says this is the silkiest shifter, and the word notchy is just the opposite.

Part of it might be you pull it down, and then it snaps in place a bit to the right. This shifter is not for the heavy handed

Im hoping for an adjustment or something.

When you shift from 1st to 2nd, don't pull down to your left too much. Try to pull it straight down into 2nd and it will reduce a lot of the notchyness.

I still think it more than just pulling straight down. any better answer to this question?

the consensus seems to be that the 1-2 is notchy, and that seems to be a trait of honda trannies am I correct in assuming this?

Mine just turned 1000 kms and I get the same notchy feeling when shifting from 1 to 2 quite often. There are times when it's silky smooth though but I can't seem to find a way to do it all the time. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this because I thought of taking my X to the dealer to get it checked.

starting to think this is normal, and it's nothing to worry about.

It is notchy, but you can minimize the notchyness by pulling straight down instead of left-down.

I pulled straight down, at my 6pm and it seemed to do the trick

This same thing has bothered me for a long time. I'll try the straight down thing today. I've been revving a little higher in 1st though lately when I'm just taking it easy so it doesn't drop me so low into RPM's. I guess it's common sense because of the large change in ratio, but it took me a while to figure it out.

btw, the link that you gave us doesnt work..
if it's grinding, i'm not sure what the cause may be. it may be a simple case of definitions. your definition of "grinding" is not the same as mine.

i've had crunching and notchy 1-2 shifts from time to time. if this happens, i will just go 1-N-2 to eliminate the crunch/notch.

grinding is a very loud and distinct sound. it's happened while trying to get into reverse, even at a complete standstill, and i HATE hearing it.

the feeling is not griding, but rather a notchy feeling on the shifter, it's hesitant from time to time and pulling straight down helps

i'm not sure if that's the consensus.

i think the consensus may be that the 1-2 can be notchy, at times.

but 9 times out of 10 for me, it'll be a smooth shift.

i would think so. my new tsx feels a bit notchy on 1-2. the prelude i had prior to also had a little notch. & the s2000 i drove also had a bit of a notch from 1-2.

but getting the 1-2 shift without it bucking can be a bit tricky sometimes. no lazy shifts there.

sounds like the 1-2 shift in honda's, always cause bucking.

Even my sisters Civic EX does this
