04 TSX - How Many Miles to Expect for Life of the Car?
#41
Wow,
Like everyone else here. Congrats~!
My 04 TSK is at 105K and I pray that she goes another 200K.
haha I actually put my hand on top of the dash and gave her a good love tap thanking for a job well done. The car looks great and the interior still looks like new. I dont drive it as hard as I used to. I rarely take it above 4000rpm. But I do like to hit 100mph atleast once a month. (takes forever just on 5th gear. i drive an automatic)
Im getting ready to take her on +2500miles trip across the country for grad school. Any tips on what I can do to prepare her for the long 40 hour trip.
I plan on replacing some parts. Any recommendations?
Air Filter (Ive been using Fram from walmart)
Oil Change (I just go where I have a coupon. $15.99) I change in 4000-5000mile intervals.
Cabin Filter (Ive been using OEM, anything else?)
Spark Plugs? I haven't changed the originals but after hearing Roger go for 250k with his original sparkplugs, I feel less inclined to change them.
Am I missing anything?
Like everyone else here. Congrats~!

Engine coolant is another thing to drain and replace. It's about $11/gallon. Simple job to do too.
How are your brakes? Has the brake fluid ever been bled and replaced?

Great news! Glad to hear the car is holding up so well. I hope to keep my '07 for at least 10 more years. I just sold my '95 Accord with 253K miles and the original clutch. Here's hoping the TSX can fill the Accord's very big shoes (tires?) LOL.

While you were changing the spark plugs, you ought to have done a compression check. This would tell you about the condition of the piston rings (compression rings), potential intake and exhaust value leaks, and reduction in horsepower due to a drop in compression ratio. Each cylinder ought to be within 15 PSI of the other cylinders. And, all of them ought to be within 80 percent of the published spec.
I do not recommend it to others, but personally, with 240,000 miles on the car, I would likely switch to regular grade gasoline and forget about using higher octane.
I would not touch the alternator as long as it is not making a noise (indicating a dry bearing in the rear). The most common failure with alternators is the rear bearing going bad because the grease gets too thin or loses it properties. A synthetic grease would likely have a longer life span. It is reasonably easy to break an alternator apart and put new grease in the rear bearing. You use two pieces of a thin coat hanger (usually one of the white ones) to hold the carbon brushes in place while putting the front and rear ends back together. Getting the alternator off, and back on, the car would probably be a lot more difficult. Don't apply too much grease -- or it can work its way out and get on the brushes.
If squirting 3 squirts of oil into a cylinder improves the compression reading, then it is normal wear on the compression rings and not a value that is leaking. A leak down test is even better , but it takes a screw in compression gauge and special technique.
