$2400 for extended warranty? Decent deal or rip off?

I recently bought an 06 TSX with 40K miles. Thinking about an extended warranty for the car. I'm in Atlanta and the cheapest price at the dealerships was $2400 for 6 more years and 100K miles total. 0 deductible. Wondering what others were quoted and if the 2400 is a good/decent price.....Thanks in advance.

Hi,
2400$ is a bit steep. I paid 1500 for the extended warranty, 8yr/120k 0 deductible.
Thanks,

That seems like a ton of money to me (I think I'd pass on it). It must be because the car is 4 years old. I did get a 6 yr/100K mile extended for my 05 (was like $1100 I think), but that was when it was new. I'm at 115K now, so it's expired. I used it for a few things, but just little stuff.

Call Tim @ HondaAcuraWorld. He will give you an accurate/realistic quote.

Thanks for the feedback. I called some more dealerships and was quoted $1925 for 5 more years and 60K more miles. Should I take it? Thanks

I paid $1250 for mine (in 2005)...7yrs/100K - $0 deductible. Dealership pays me back the purchase price at the end, if I don't use it.

I would say don't even bother with it. Unless you have a major engine/transmisison failure you probably wouldn't break even with what you paid for it. Yes it is insurance but most times is a cost you will never recover. Oh and even $1950 is still too high. If you can get it around $1100 I would say jump on it.

Yea, I know 1925 is kinda steep but the car has Nav and the voice activated controls are already not working properly. One big reason why I'm interested in extended warranty is because of Nav. Thanks.....Oh HondaAcuraWorld closed btw.

Be sure to check the fine print. My warranty was similar (if yours is a Honda warranty). Mine was 6 yr/100K miles on an 05 bought at purchase in 05 (and since expired). You can get reimbursed if it's not used, but....... that's after the time expires and you don't hit the mileage. What I mean is, if you say sell the car after 5 years with 80K miles on it and haven't used the warranty (which itself is a separate issue I'll comment on next), sorry.... no reimbursement. You have to own the car until the 6 years has past, have less than 100K miles, and you haven't used it. So.... you have to own the car at least 6 years, have less than 100K miles on it, and never use the warranty. That said, once the original 4 yr/50K mile warranty has expired, you may find that any little repair performed by the dealer will have a portion of it charged to the extended warranty. Once a $10 charge for say a brake light bulb is charged to the extended warranty, then your opportunity for reimbursement is gone. I wasn't too worried about this since I had every intention of keeping the car past the 100K mile mark (I'm at 115K now), but it is something to look out for. You could not use the dealer, or ask them to not charge anything minor to the extended warranty. If you already have, it's too late.
Of course yours may be different.... Like I said, check the fine print; don't just accept what a dealer may have told you.

Good points, I was under the impression that I could decide whether to charge a repair to the warranty, or pay for it out of pocket. I haven't been to the dealership since my factory warranty expired (I do my own maintenance for the most part). The actual warranty is a 3rd party company, Wynn's. I made the decision to buy it based on keeping the car 7yrs/100k or longer -- I keep cars a while. Plus it sounds silly, but I'm letting $1250 help motivate me to keep the car through the extended warranty, as my eyes stray looking at the newer cars on the road.

A third party may well have a different reimbursement policy, and I don't think your using the purchase price of the warranty for discipline is silly at all. My 05 was actually my wife's for the first two years, and before I took it over, selling it was discussed (she was originally supposed to drive it for at least 3 years and she drives over 30K miles a year). This is what prompted to me to read the reimbursement policy and I discovered that we'd have to keep the car for at least 6 years if we were to have any chance of getting our money back (that seemed really unlikely at the time). My only other experience with an extended warranty was with my WRX, and when I sold that, I was able to get reimbursed for the extended warranty I had bought for that car and not used.

I would not waste my money. Unless you have a major engine problem, you won't ever get your money back. Acura's are really good and made to last as long as you keep up on your maintenance, your car will last easy 7 - 8 more years.

Here's the way to look at extended warranties. Buy one if the item you are purchasing is not reliable. Since you are buying one of the most reliable cars on the market, you don't need an extended warranty. My biggest beef with my '07 TSX is the crappy windshield wipers.

Extended warranties are simply about your tolerance for risk. To me, it comes down to how easily could you absorb a $3K repair in the next six years? If you can, then you probably can pass. If you'd have to borrow money to cover something like that, then maybe the warranty isn't such a bad idea. No matter which way you go, you always run the risk of buying it and never using it, or not getting it and being hit with a big bill. No guarantees either way.

I've been on both sides. I've had them and never used them, had them and would up ahead. I thought through it this way for my current two:

TSX: I got it at 5K miles, therefore I know the history, I'm gentle on it, I opted not.
MDX: Got it at 55K miles, lots of gadgets and electronics, unknown history, got one. $2K. So far, I've recovered half of that with a failed radio.

All that said, $2.4K is very high.

He's no longer a vendor here, but you can still ask, I guess?

Sounds nice, but there's got to be a catch.

These "warranties" are serious money makers for the stealers.

Reimbursement is available for many (of not most or all) extended warranties. They're not all the same though, and the reimbursement policies varies. The 6 year/100K mile extended I had on my 05 required that I keep the car 6 years, the mileage be under 100K, and have made no claims on it for me to get my money back. The extended warranty I had on my WRX allowed me to cash it in at anytime (and I did) as long as it hadn't expired and I hadn't used it. It is a huge money maker for dealerships I agree (partly I assume because some people don't realize they can get their money back), but it can be good insurance (which is really what an extended warranty is), it can be a plus for resale (especially on anything German), and it may actually pay for itself should the worst happen. This is a very contentious issue, and I don't mean to start another pissing contest about extended warranties (these forums are full of them I know), but..... I'm afraid there is probably allot of misinformation out there about them.

Funny, I was just looking into this after my third gear problems (08 TSX, 23k miles, 3rd gear syncro apparently has issues)..I was also told the clutch/flywheel has issues, but the dealer wants me to pay for this (even though I'm almost 30, apparently anyone younger than 50 who drives a manual car is a street racer; I drive like grandma but just feel more at "home" with manuals, hence why I buy them /rant).

Dealer wants $1700 or $1800 for the 96k miles one, and I found it online for ~$1500. It's a lot steeper than it used to be last I checked. I might shop around a bit more, and bite if I can find it for $1200-$1300...it's cheap insurance, if anything I'll get the "little things that go wrong" fixed with it to make up my money spent.

I had the extended warranty thru Honda on my 05 civic. When I traded it 2 1/2 year later for my tsx the acura dealer helped me cancel that warranty. A few weeks later I received a check - about $200.00 from what I paid for it. Are you sure you are required to keep the car 6 years. Isn't it 6 years or 100,000 miles (just like the 4yr/50,000 regular warranty)
