Wheel Dilemma

Wheel Dilemma
As the title states I have a dilemma. I bought some 17" Maximm wheels today. They are in really good condition but the tires are not. They came with 205/40/17 tires. My dilemma is I looked at my tires and they say 215/60/15 so would I need a 215/60/17 for the wheel. Would that even work? I'm sorry if my I am trying to say is hard to understand. If I can get new tires for them I will but if not I'm just going to have to try and sell them. Any input would be great.

i'm a noob compared to some but i can give my small input on this.
first # is width aka 215
2nd # is sidewall height aka 40
then of coarse rim size
i think discounttire.com has a tire selector where you can "inch up" and give appropriate tire size selections when you go up in rim size compared to stock.
you would be better off with a smaller sidewall size on the 17s for travel but 40 is the smallest i'd go to avoid bent rims etc. Just because stock sidewall is 60 doesnt mean you have to stick with it. you could get a 225/ 50/15 for stock wheels if you wanted.
i hope this helps and others chime in.

Memphis thanks for the input but I am going to keep my stock rims and tires intact. I want to know if a 215/50 or 60/17 tire will work on the rim since it came with a 205/40/17.

The closest circumference-wise in 215 width to the ones on your car right now are 215/45-17. Since the ones on your car don't seem to be factory size either, at least compared to 3.2s, I don't know what to compare it to.

yes a 50 or 60 series sidewall will work on your 17 if you really wanted that size. but i'd keep it between 45 and 50 for the 17s to keep you close to the same overall size and not mess up with speed etc.
pic of the wheels? what is the rim width? that will be a factor as well for tire width.
ok close example based upon a tool on a site i like.
your 215/60/15 circumference is 25.16 vs new 215/40/17 is 23.46
so you need to get a 215/45/17 to be close to stock circumference. stock size 205/60/15 is 24.69 vs 215/45/17 is 24.62
that help or make sense?
