Exclamation tick..tick..tick..

hey everyone, my tl 2.5 restoration is almost complete.. except this annoying ticking sound! it increases with RPM's, is random ( hot or cold whenever ... on/off), i know alot of you have had problems like this. this will be a DIY fix for me im strapped for $$. so if any of you had this problem please add some input, and what it was for you. it sounds like its coming from behind my engine between that and the firewall, on the left side. thanks!!

The 2.5TL is notorious for cracks in the exhaust manifold that produces a ticking, rattling sound, that decreases as engine warms. It is expensive to buy a new exhaust manifold and pretty good job to access. It would be more noticeable on the pax side near the battery.

Valves can be adjusted if it's a loose valve, but these generally are very noticeable cold and either stops or improves as you warm up.

good luck

It's most likely your exhaust manifold. I have it when I drive and my exhaust hasn't heated up yet. Mine is from the gasket itself, though, and it goes away after warming up both the motor and the exhaust, causing the metal to expand and seal itself.

so my friend owns a steel company.. i was gonna take a look at the manifold with him this weekend and fix any crack since they dont sell a new manifold.. the O2 sensor is my one concern..for my exhaust i just snipped the wires then heat sealed them back together..after cutting power from battery.. can this method be used for the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold? and is there anything else special to do, besides replace gaskets. thanks!

Why don't you remove the sensor completely? A vice grip and some PB and it comes right out. The reason my gasket is bad is because I forgot to spray some copper-spray onto it after I took it off to compare it with the 3.2 manifold, so don't forget to do that before you put it back on.

I prefer sprays. They're less messy and easier to get an even coat on. With a brand new gasket you don't need to use it, but I had it on, took it off, then put it back.
