Question about "Exhaust Manifold Cover"

hello peeps,

I have a 96 2.5 tl and from what i'm told this part is called the "exhaust manifold cover" it came off while i was going over a speed bump ( i guess i went over it little too fast). I went to the dealership and they're askin almost 300$ for this part and its just a piece of metal. I asked around, one person says its important because it prevents the salt thats put on the roads in the winter from reaching the catalytic converter and the rest of the exhaust line. The lady at the parts dept said it aint that important and so have a couple mechanics. But i figure if the manufacturer put it there, it must be fore a reason. My car is in really really really good condition and i want to keep it that way. So what should I do? should i spent the 300$ and get it or leave it the way it is?

the 300$ must include the dumbass fee... if your car is in such great shape why are you hitting speed bumps so hard?

iam working on my exhaust manifold right now and i was going to wrap my exhaust manifold in that heat rap thing they use on headers. beacues the exhast manifold looks like a header in the 2.5 TL. and to put the shiedls back on was going to take alot of extra time to put on. well that was the idea but am puting my sheilds back on if i can and if i cant them am have to use that heat wrap.this is what the exhaust manifold looks like on the 96 TL 2.5. also i dont knoe why they had the first cat welded to the manifold for..?

An exhaust manifold IS a header.

It looks like a pre-cat, not the cat. On CA 3.2s, we had a 36" long cat, and on Other-49 ones, the cat's 33" long.

I agree with k9500: it's not in excellent shape if there are parts falling off.

~Cheers~

Its a really hard job to do. the only heat shield i took off was the one u can see when u open the hood. i took of all of my shields when i had the manifold on the ground. what bolts are you trying to get to...? when my dad and i were removeing my manifold we had to use alot of extentions to get to certan bolts. and i did remove some bolts on the shield when it was still on the car (shield was still on) so i can get to thoes hard to get bolts. how are u takeing it off..? do u got your car on jack stands or a lift..? if its on jack stands the manifold wont come down till u take of the flex pipe. have any more quetions let me noe dude....

it will be at my friends steel company, on a car lift. i was trying to take off the underside shields. where it heads up that narrow passage up to the engine. and i did remove the upper shields accessed through the engine bay. we have all the tools and stuff obviously, but i just didnt wanna try and turn it into a mess. if i just get off all bolts from the engine, disconnect 02 sensor, and unbolt from the front pipe will it just slide down?

yeah after all the bolts are off and the flex pipe is also unbolted then and the 02 sensor the whole thing will come down. u might have to wiggle it a little but after that the whole manifold should come down. so is your manifold cracked to or what..?

okay thanks, and im not sure? the car has something wrong with it. i think its exhaust because of the obvious sound sometimes and loss of power at the petal. exhaust leaks just have that feeling ya know ha. and i was gonna probably add a mid-muffler to my stock exhaust, would that help alot? im not very knowledgeble on exhaust setups

your welcome dude..yeah are you going to replace ur flex pipe too..? are u going to put the same manifold back in or you go a new one on the side..? cuz the vigor has the same motor and uses the same manifold as the TL but it dont have a cat welded to it.....

i didnt take off the manifold yet, i do it on the weekend where i have plenty of time. and i have been considering creating headers at the shop using a gasket as a template. but the shop doesnt have cad equipment so it would be hard.

If you have less than 150,000 miles on your car, take it to an Acura dealership to get it fix for free under the extended emission warranty before taking it apart. You can call Acura at 800-382-2238 and give them your vin# and ask if your car is covered under the extended emission warranty.
