Paging Texas Honda....
lol, ok I pretty much know that texas honda is an expert with 1g Tl's. So, today i took the Acura to the shop for a tune-up. The price was high but the car needed it. After the services were done, change spark plugs, air filter etc. The shop diagnosed my cel with . "EGR valve insufficient flow. They did a fuel system clean and apart from that they said that the egr valve needed to be cleaned because of too much carbon build up. The valve was completely cleaned of the carbon build up because the mechanics said the valve was good. But, after everything was done, the mechanics told me that the manifold was building up a lot of carbon therefore take it back to the shop so they can take it out and clean it from all the carbon. Now, im stuck between taking it back or not due to the fact that it's gonna cost me $110 dollars including labor or supposedly i won't pass a smog check with out the manifold cleaned out. My cel is off, but idk if it might come back on later due to the problem it "supposedly" has. Yet i was looking at the threads that some were complaining about "car shaking on idle", I had the same prob. ......so what should i do? take it back to the shop or leave as is? Texas Honda your the pro here what should i do?...any kind of help frm any one will be apreciated..
Thanks....
Thanks....

Clean it. This is probably what your manifold looks like:

Oh, and BTW, it usually isn't the EGR valve itself that goes bad, it's the pipe first, then the EGR chamber.
~Cheers~
P.S. An Texas_Honda isn't just an expert on the 1G, he's good on cars period!

Good advice from all. I cleaned my 2.5TL as one of first jobs I did. One of few things on 2.5TL that is easy to do.
You might try DIY. It doesn't get much easier than this job.
BTW, thanks for all the kudos. I've learned a lot over the years, mostly by "school of hard knocks".
I don't know how they cleaned the EGR valve unless they have special equipment. It is inaccessible to any tool, however there are special egr cleaning tools which use forced solvents to clean. In my experience, this is rarely needed. It's always the EGR passages and EGR manifold that block up w/ carbon.
good luck

The mechanic took pretty much, hours to clean the carbon out of the egr,. He was using some kind of solvent and cleaning it by hand too. I decided that i am taking it back because my cel came back on today.

PTH part 2
Well after all this time i finally took the tl to the shop to get the manifold cleaned out. I had to do it because the rough idling was getting annoying ....All I can say is Yuuuck!!! the carbon buildup was TOO much. It was so bad that the EGR passage was completely blocked off. Not only that I had a real nasty noise coming from the front left wheel, which turned out to be a bad wheel bearing.Boom there went another $200 dollars. I was sitting at the shop almost four hours because "the parts are hard to find for these cars (3.2's) " said the mechanics.
Long story short , total came out to $429 even which left me broke for a couple of days BS to the side.
The good part.....I can actually get somewhat of a smoother response as i accelerate and that nasty sound from the front wheel is gone...
Taking care of these cars might cost some money, but as you say, Take care of it and it will take care of you.
