Lost 70 miles/tank .. HELP???

97 3.2 w/ 105k miles. my mixed city/hwy driving used to land me between 360-380 miles to a tank driving it as i pleased. here is the sequence of events... btw I still drive the same exact routes I have driven since I have owned this car..

CEL was on for EGR. filled up gas tank, Took it to Acura, had a friend (a tech. there) clean it all out. EGR CEL went away but now I immediately had a CEL for the o2 sensor. from that tank on I was down to about 335-340 miles/tank. Figured ok, maybe its just the o2.

about a month later I got it in and had the same friend at Acura replace the o2's and the CEL went away. well within a couple weeks I was down to about 315 miles/tank at BEST (Im talkin running on fumes and taking 16.5 gallon to fill back up).

I took it back to Acura and had the plugs and coils replaced. And now I am lucky to get 305 miles/tank.

so WHAT THE CRAP could be the problem here? I mean granted it is only like 3-4 miles per gallon I have lost... I dont understand why. It went about 6-7 months of ownership with consistant tank mileage then just dropped. PLEASE offer any educated guesses! TIA.

and FYI I have tried going to different gas stations and no luck.

Have you seafoamed the intake and gas, and replaced the spark plugs with NGK Iridiums

No I haven't seafoamed it, There is bound to be a problem somewhere. I ran 370 miles, was on E, filled it up, drove 15 miles to acura to have the EGR cleaned out, and only got like 330 miles from that tank and worse as they went on. So for 6-7 months of getting 370-380 every single tank, then as soon as it gets worked on the mileage drops. And the plugs + coils were replaced with whatever the Acura dealer uses. (OEM part #)

and obviously I am talking in american units. Miles, gallons...

is the any type of vacuum line that could have gotten crossed when the EGR was done or something to effect this gas mileage?

I wouldnt think anything was done wrong as the CEL went away, and it runs/idles "normal".

Im sure the seafoam would help, but it doesnt just fix whatever caused the sudden drop in mileage ya know? Thanks... any others?

Thats awful! do you drive it hard? heavy foot? I'm pretty easy on mine most of the time unless some jerk is in my way and I need to get by.... that junk would be up for sale with the quickness if it was getting that poor of mileage. There just isn't enough HP to justify the mileage....

and I thought mine was bad at 320. i could probably run it further until the gas light came on but the thought of running out makes me fill 'er then.

I've had my EGR system cleaned and replaced the plugs and coil packs but still only get about 26mpg with a mix of stop and go city driving and runnin' the interstate at 75-80.

How clean is your air filter ?

I still get about 20+ MPG even though I take regular trips to 200km/h. Check your tyre pressure, and see how much rolling resistance your tyres have.

~Cheers~

P.S. You could've bought the coils from me!!

I wish... The best gas mileage I have EVER gotten in this car was like 23-24 mpg. And that was on a trip to the beach where most of the miles were held steady around 80mph.

And I didn't buy the coils, or plugs, or pay for anything else. Acura has an extended warranty on the 97 (maybe others?) 3.2 TL for the emissions system to 150k miles. And if the stuff for the emissions system goes bad, can cause plugs to go bad. So they did all the work with new OEM Acura parts for free.

I replaced tires somewhere in the mist of the bad mileage... and had it aligned. so I wouldn't guess that to be a factor.

damn... 243k. yea that more than double my mileage... like 33k more than double. that's awesome. As soon as I can get this problem figured out Ill start pushing to sell it harder. I am about to start a very long commute back and forth to school everyday and I am wanting a cheap old 4 cylinder civic.

It was free. <150k miles Acura does it free b/c of the extended warranty. And to everybody that thinks the intake manifold has to be removed to clean the pipes well enough for the CEL to go out, not true. There is a tool you can buy that acts like a snake and cleans everything out (without getting any carbon pushed in the cylinders). Took the mechanic about 40 minutes to take everything apart and clean it and have it back together.
