Engine stops at speed

97 3.2 TL with 180k. Engine just stops at speed every 0.5 mile or so. All electronics continue to function. Car will eventually start. Replaced a totally plugged fuel filter. Fixed 99% of the stalls, but engine still cuts-out infrequently. The other night it cut out at 70mph coasted to about 20mph and then engine just started again - without engaging the starter (didn't touch the ignition key or anything else as I was too occupied avoiding getting killed on the Capitol beltway - scary)!
Will a plugged fuel filter damage the fuel pump? Does this sound like a coil problem (electrical) or a fuel problem. Thoughts and thanks!

Problem symptoms suggest possible failing keyswith contacts allowing system to shutdown intermittently. You really need to understand whether stalls are due to loss of ignition (keyswitch) or loss of fuel pressure (bad main fuel relay, bad fuel pumpt, etc). A crude but effective check of fuel pressure is to crack the bleeder bolt on the fuel rail. If you get a spray of fuel, the pressure is probably OK.

When no start occurs, use a spare spark plug grounded to engine to check for spark. If no spark, the keyswitch seems likely.
