Defected Compressor? Acura TL 3.2 1997
Defected Compressor? Acura TL 3.2 1997
AC has no cooling. Looks like ac turning on as sound of engine changes when I turn AC on. Visited car mechanic and he told me that Compressor is working but compressor clutch is not working and the clutch is not turing on the compressor. He recommended to change compressor, clutch, drier. I have few questions:
1. how it is possible to say the compressor is working but cluthc is defected as with defected clutch compressor can not run?
2. Can I just replace the cluthc only if compressor is working?
3. should I go for new compressor, used or re-manufactured compressor. I am able to find 'spectra' new compressor for around 175 $.
4. Labor was suggested by him is 200-250 $. is it reasonable?

I had very similar issue on my 96 3.2. One day the A/C died on t he highway. I got home, hit the AC, it sounded like it was kicking on like normal. Clutch and compressor were turning but only hot air blowing. Got quoted an arm and a leg so I decided to give it a try myself. I bought a cheap used compressor and clutch from a salvaged 97 RL for $45 which I put in myself yesterday. I've also replaced the expansion valve and the receiver drier is in the mail. Going to get it vac'd and recharged next week.
I have no prior experience with working on cars and I've put about 3 hours of labor into this so far. I'd say give it a go yourself. Let me know if you have any questions.
