'96 3.2 won't pass smog, help

It runs perfect with 168K miles. I only get oil changes regularly though.
It was suggested we run a $12.95 bottle of "Techron" through a tank of gas then come back. Now it's close to passing. They want to put spark plugs in next. If it matters I always use premium fuel. I am in San Francisco which may have tougher rules.
What would be your next move ?

Is the Check Engine Light on? If yes, what codes?

If no check engine light, what were the emission numbers that did not pass? This will provide a hint to your problem usually.

good luck

Thanks everyone. The spark plugs did it. I just felt I might be not guided right at the smog place and also there was a recall last year that would have fixed anything for free but I had too many miles and I was worried it would be more serious.

The warning light has been on for years but when it first went on the dealer said everything checked out ignore it. That didn't sound right but the price was right.

Where in SF are you located? Maybe I've seen you around... Forget about the Techron additive, though. If you're worried about smog in the future, put a bottle of GTP through and drive like a madman for a little while. BTW, where did you go for smog? Please don't tell me Chevron as they charge $75 or so for a test...

~Cheers~

I went to Union 76 at 2nd and Lincoln in San Rafael. Smog $45 plus cert. He was out of fuel additve which is why he sent me to Chevron. I noticed the difference right away after driving to Sears Point, turning around and flooring it to about 100 mph. I can't imagine "GTP" or whatever working better but just on your rec. I will use it in 3,000 miles (that's what the techron bottle said, every 3K)
He charged half price for the second, actually third test, I wonder what most places charge for testing after you failed.
