96 2.5tl stuck in park and......

I just bought a 96 2.5tl and am having issues already. First its a automatic and it is stuck in park unless i use the key to take it out of park. Then ono top of that I have to start the car in neutral. Are these problems related or 2 seperate problems? Could it be the neutral safety switch / backup-light switch? My brake lights work, but my reverse lights dont. All fuses are good. Thanks

They are both related and it sounds like its the neutral safety switch.

Is this located by the shifter under the center console?

I've been doing a lot of research, is the backup light switch the samething as the neutral safety switch? if not can you please tell me where the neutral switch is. I know the backup light switch is next to shifter.

Is there anyone that has changed there neutral safety switch? The part cost $200, but I checked how much the same part is for the vigor and its only $89. They look identical, I might buy the vigor neutral safety switch and try it out. What you guys think? Is the switch under the shifter assembly?
