1998 tl transmission issues
1998 tl 3.2 4spd automatic. Newly purchased 170,000 miles.
some hard shifting on more than one gear. maybe a little growling when starting from a full stop. And I don't believe the torque converter is locking up. 3000 rpms at 60 mph. D4....... NO CHECK ENGIEN LIGHT OR TROUBLE CODES.
I have not notice any slipping. fluid is full, possibly a little overfill. I don't have two dots on the dipstick. it has a 2inch flat metal plate with a dash stamped into it.. I have read many post about cleaning shift selonoids. but the locations they talk about don't seem to match my car. My battery is front passenger side. How many solenoids can I clean on this vehicle and where can I find them? Which one controls the torque converter? Thanks...

the sol that you most likely need to replace is in the trans, its bolted the the valve housing. have your codes checked just incase dash light is out. the sol most are ref. to sits right on the top of the bell housing straight down from the fire wall.
1998 tl tranny solenoid
My bad... the battery is driverside front . and the throttle body points to the front if the engine with the air filter front passenger side.
can I get to the inside solenoid without taking out the tranny.
I will take another look at the firewall area. should I look on driver side or passenger side of the engine?....Thanks....

solenoids up at the firewall were clean and both click with 12 volts applied.
the filter didn't look too bad . but I changed it anyways. and car shifts much better. But I still see no sign of the torque converter locking up.
just under 3000 rpms at 60mph.
1998 tl 3.2....
what should the rpms be at 60 mph?

i think mine are at like 2.5k or so maybe? just depends. the sol you need to fix though can be fixed when you change the fluid. that thing that you stuck the filter on is the valve housing, unbolt that and on top is the shift sol. bout 200 bones new.

98 2.5 automatic with 139k+ miles, bought it used at 134k, shifts ok if i accelerate Atlanta style, but rather clunky from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 if accelerating normally. I'v started manually shifting and it seems to do better. Ashamed to say i haven't check to see if anything is wrong with fluid or filters.
