VIN # on the engine block
There is an engine number on the block on driver's side up high. Diagram doesn't make clear exactly where it's located, perhaps the flywheel housing behind the starter.
I don't know engine number is directly related to VIN. They both have a serial number, but not sure they would match when new. In the example in the shop manual, the last 6 digits match up for VIN and engine no.
Manufacturer will know which engine no. went w/ original VIN, but I'm not sure anybody else has that info. I tried pretty hard to find out how to match engine and VIN when I was looking for a used engine for a Dodge Ram 1500 PU, and finally gave up.
good luck

thanks Texas.
I just got done installing a used engine in my car and the Salvage yards gave me the VIN# of the engine with a copy of Car Fax which shows only 39k. I am trying to make sure this is the same engine.
